ALLIANCE, Ohio – The no. 9 nationally ranked Mount Union men's basketball team defeated Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Wilmington 90-87 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
It was senior night at Mount Union so prior to the game seniors
Dante Collier (Columbus / Licking Heights),
Caleb Laurich (Akron / Copley) and
Kevin Moore (Youngstown / Campbell Memorial) were all honored.
The Purple Raiders (22-2, 13-2 OAC) had three players score in double figures with junior
Elijah Farrington (Massillon / Massillon Washington) leading the way with a career-high 32 points and grabbed 13-rebounds to record his ninth double-double of the season. Junior
Kevin Hamilton (Akron / St. Vincent St. Mary) also scored a career-high with 25 points and Laurich rounded out the Raiders in double digits, scoring 13 points.
The Quakers (9-14, 5-9 OAC) were led by Domenic Farley who scored a team-high 20, Izaiah Cathey who added 19 and Elijah Cathey who scored 13 points.
After a back-and-forth start to the game Mount Union would go on a quick 7-0 run to take a 13-8 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half. The Raiders would maintain a narrow lead over the next five minutes of action, pushing it out to its largest at eight points with just under 10 minutes to play in the first half. Wilmington would answer however, going on a 10-0 run over the next 3:09 of game time to take a 27-25 lead with 6:44 remaining in the first half. The Raiders would answer with a 12-0 run of their own to take their largest lead of the game at 37-27 with just over two and a half minutes to play in the half. The Quakers would close the first half on a 10-1 run to cut the lead down to just one at 38-37 heading into the halftime break.
After another back-and-forth start to the half, Wilmington would go on an 8-2 run over the next 3:40 to take their largest lead of the game at 53-47 with 13:22 left to play. The Quakers would maintain their lead over the next seven minutes before the Raiders would go on a 16-1 run over the next 4:25 to recapture the lead at 76-69 with just under two minutes left to play. Wilmington would answer once again, however, going on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 76 and force overtime.
After a back-and-forth start to the overtime period with the game tied at 83 apiece, Mount Union would outscore Wilmington 7-4 over the final 2:24 to grab the 90-87 victory.
The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Columbus to take on Capital on Wednesday, February 18 for their regular season finale at 7 p.m.
