Women's Lacrosse: Raiders Open Season With 18-12 Victory Over DePauw

GREENCASTLE, Indiana—The Mount Union women's lacrosse team opened its season Saturday afternoon with an 18-12 victory over DePauw (Ind.).
 
The Purple Raiders (1-0) were led by fifth-year Haylee Handrahan (Hilliard) with four goals and three assists. Senior Ella Nejad (Rocky River) picked up six points with three assists and three goals.
 
Freshman Lizzie Dorley (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton LaSalle) and junior Mae Pawlikowski (Orchard Park, N.Y.) finished with three goals, junior Emma Labbe (Uniontown / Lake) and sophomore Anna Weinel (Dayton / Chaminade-Julienne) each scored two goals and freshman Mackenzie Brown (Pine Bush, N.Y. / Pine Bush) finished with a goal.
 
Freshman Kaitlyn Kuczinski (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Chartiers Valley) played all 60 minutes in goal making eight saves while junior Emma Grell (Mars, Pa. / Mars Area) finished with a team high three caused turnovers.
 
DePauw (0-1) was led by Katie Jauchius with three goals while Niamh Callahan finished with five saves in goal.
 
Weinel got the scoring going for the Raiders this season with a goal just 45 seconds into the game. DePauw responded with a 4-1 run as Brown scored in the run for Mount Union. Mount Union finished the quarter, scoring the final five goals as Nejad had two goals with Handrahan, Pawlikowski, and Weinel each scored.
 
Mount Union carried the momentum into the second quarter as Handrahan scored two and Pawlikowski scored a goal with Mount Union leading 10-4. DePauw battled back with a 4-1 run as Handrahan scored another goal for Mount Union as the Raiders led 11-8 at the half.
 
Dorley got Mount Union going in the third quarter, scoring the first two goals pushing the lead back out to five. DePauw scored the next two goals but a goal from Labbe finished off the third quarter with Mount Union leading 14-10.
 
In the final quarter Pawlikowski and Dorley pushed the lead out to 16-10 with a goal each. DePauw made one more push at Mount Union scoring two goals but a goal from Labbe and Nejad closed the door for the victory.
 
Mount Union will now return home for its open opener on Saturday taking on Kenyon at 1 PM.
