CLERMONT, Fla. – Mount Union's softball team won a pair of games on the second day of the Florida portion of their Spring Break trip, beating Nichols 8-0 in five innings and beating no. 7 nationally ranked East Texas Baptist 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Purple Raiders (6-4) would strike first in their first game of the day with a four run first inning with RBIs coming from freshman
Addy Antonetz (Zanesville / West Muskingum), senior
Kendyll Cahill (Groveport / Groveport Madison) and senior
Kaitlyn Culver (Girard) to take an early 4-0 lead. Mount Union would add to their lead with a pair of runs in the second after a two-RBI single from Antonetz scored senior
Sydney Mercer (Salem / West Branch) and junior
Kyndall Hahn (Garrettsville / James Garfield) to make their lead six runs.
The Raiders would go on to add two more runs in the top of the fourth inning, the first came from a Mercer RBI single that scored freshman
Ava Beas (Brunswick) and then freshman
McKayla Miller (Mogadore / Field) scored after an error by the Nichols second baseman to extend the lead to 8-0.
The Bison (2-4) wouldn't have an answer over the remainder of the game as the Raiders would go on to win 8-0 in five innings.
Cahill got the start in the circle for Mount Union and picked up her third win of the season giving up no hits and striking out one in an inning of action. Sophomore
Daniella Vecchio (Monongahela, Pa. / Ringgold) would come in to pitch two innings in relief and gave up zero runs on zero hits and struck out one. Freshman
Ari Simpson (Cardington / Cardington Local) would come in to pitch the final two innings and gave up zero runs on just one hit and struck out three.
The Raiders would strike first again in their second game of the day against East Texas Baptist when Antonetz hit an RBI single that scored Mercer and on the play, Mercer broke the School Record for career runs, scoring the 155th run of her career, breaking a record that had stood for 25+ years.
Mount Union would then add a second run in the bottom half of the fourth inning when senior
Lydia Brunner (Minerva) scored following an error by the East Texas Baptist pitcher to make the lead 2-0.
The Tigers (13-3) wouldn't have an answer over the remainder of the game as the Raiders would go on to win 2-0.
Cahill got the start once again for Mount Union in the circle and pitched a complete game shutout, giving up just four hits and striking out two.
The Raiders return to action on Friday, March 13 to wrap up their Spring Break trip with games against Earlham at 2:30 p.m. and Albertus Magnus at 4:45 p.m. at the Bartow Sports Complex in Bartow, Fla.
