Purple Raiders Open OAC Play with Win Over Baldwin Wallace

ALLIANCE, Ohio-- The Mount Union women's lacrosse team outlasted Baldwin Wallace in an 11-9 victory to begin Ohio Athletic Conference play. The first half was played on Thursday evening, and the game was postponed at halftime, finishing this Friday evening resulting in a game lasting 25 hours.
 
The Purple Raiders (3-4, 1-0 OAC) were led by Lizzie Dorley with three goals and an assist.
 
Haylee Handrahan, Anna Weinel and Ella Nejad each had two goals while Emma Kielbasa and Mae Pawlikowski each had a goal.
 
Kaitlyn Kuczinski made five saves for the Raiders in goal while Emma Labbe picked up seven draw controls with Pawlikowski picking up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.
 
Baldwin Wallace (5-3, 0-1 OAC) was led by Clare Alic and Hayley Huston with three goals while Aubrey Berner finished the day with 10 saves.
 
In the first period, the Purple Raiders got off to a strong start, scoring two goals within the first three minutes. Emma Kielbasa and Anna Weinel netted those goals. However, the Yellow Jackets responded quickly, with Clare Alic scoring a goal at 11:57 remaining in the period, narrowing the lead to 2-1.
 
Haylee Handrahan scored two goals for Mount Union in a span of just 3 minutes and 17 seconds. During that same period, Emma Northup found the net for Baldwin Wallace with an assist from Lexi Miller, bringing the score to 4-2 in favor of the Purple Raiders. Mount Union continued to excel as Ella Nejad scored a goal with 4:22 remaining in the period. The Purple Raiders led 5-2 to end the first period.
 
The Yellow Jackets kicked off the scoring at the beginning of the second period. However, Mount Union quickly responded, as Nejad found the back of the net, followed by Lizzie Dorley scoring with an assist from Kielbasa, bringing the score to 7-3 in favor of the Purple Raiders with 6:11 remaining in the second period.
 
Baldwin Wallace finished the second period strong, scoring two goals to trim the lead to 7-5 at halftime.
 
In the third quarter, Dorley scored her second goal in the game. The Yellow Jackets narrowed the deficit to one point. Madie Tomei and Northup scored a goal, and it was her second of the game, leaving the Purple Raiders with an 8-7 lead at the end of the quarter.
 
 Dorley scored her third goal of the game with 11:46 remaining in the fourth period, for her second three-goal game of the season. Dorley dished an assist to Mae Pawlikowski, as she scored a goal with 10:36 remaining in the period. Weinel scored her second goal of the game to extend the Mount Union lead to 11-7.
 
 The Yellow Jackets added two more goals in the period, but the Purple Raiders shut the door to secure the 11-9 victory. 
 
Mount Union's next game will be tomorrow on the road at 1:00 PM against Ohio Wesleyan University.
