WESTERVILLE, Ohio—The Mount Union men's lacrosse team took down No. 4 seed Otterbein 14-11 in the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament Quarterfinal Saturday afternoon.
Mount Union not only got its first win against Otterbein in school history but got its first ever OAC tournament victory and will play in its first ever OAC Tournament Semifinal in school history.
The Purple Raiders (9-7, 4-4 OAC) were led by
Talon Osmun with four goals and
Braylon Li with three goals.
Sly Sundown finished the game with two goals while
Aiden Mays,
Gary Possler,
Noah Grigson, and
Alec Feigel each scored a goal.
Spencer Logsdon finished the game with one goals and three assists for the Raiders.
William Entner finished the game with 17 saves in goal while
Riley Douglas was 15 of 23 on the faceoff and picked up a game-high nine groundballs.
Otterbein (8-4, 5-3 OAC) was led by Gabe Thayer with four goals and Zach Courie with nine saves.
Otterbein got a goal to start the game which was quickly responded with a goal from Osmun just seven seconds later. A goal from Otterbein less than a minute later gave the Cardinals a 2-1 lead. Mount Union scored five straight in the quarter as Osmun had two with Sundown, Grigson and Feigel each scoring a goal in the run. An Otterbein goal ended the quarter as Mount Union took a 6-3 lead into the first break.
Mount Union got the second quarter going with a goal from Sundown as Otterbein responded with a goal less than a minute later. Otterbein scored a goal but Mount Union responded with a goal from Logsdon and Li. Otterbein ended the quarter with a goal as Mount Union took a 9-5 lead into the halftime break.
Otterbein got the first goal of the quarter just 1:34 into the game but Mount Union's defense shut them down the rest of the quarter not allowing a goal. Mount Union then scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the quarter from Li and Osmun leading 11-6 after three quarters.
The fourth quarter began with a goal from Otterbein, but Li and Mays pushed Mount Union's lead out to six goals with 11:58 remaining in the game. Otterbein then went on a 3-0 run to get within three with 3:27 remaining. Possler ended the game for Mount Union with a goal with56 seconds remaining. Otterbein got one last goal but was not enough to comeback.
Mount Union will now advance to the OAC Semifinals heading to Berea on Wednesday taking on the No. 1 seed Baldwin Wallace at 7 pm.
