Men's Soccer: Raiders Use Big Second Half to Top Franciscan

ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's men's soccer team defeated Franciscan 5-2 in a non-conference match on Tuesday evening.

The Barons (0-4) would strike first when Aidan Mahony found the back of the net in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead. Franciscan would then add to their lead in the 30th minute when Noah Haggerty scored to stretch the lead to two goals.

The Purple Raiders (2-2-1) would get on the board in the 44th minute when junior Caleb Carney (Charleston, W.Va. / George Washington) found the back of the net off an assist from sophomore Matt Caputo (Hudson) to cut the lead to just a goal.

Mount Union would then tie the game at two goals apiece in the 58th minute when senior Tyler Harsch (Aliquippa, Pa. / Central Valley) scored off an assist from senior Dom Kustura (Willowick / Eastlake North). The Raiders would then claim their first lead of the game less than a minute later when senior Alex Depperschmidt (Mansfield / Lexington) found the back of the net to take a 3-2 lead.

The Mount Union lead would grow to two goals in the 63rd minute when Franciscan scored an own goal and then in the 84th minute the scoring would be capped off by a Kustura goal, with sophomore Isaac Craciun (Lakewood) picking up the assist.

The Barons wouldn't be able to answer of the final six minutes of game time as the Raiders would go on to win 5-2.

The Raiders hit the road next when they travel to Newport News, Va. to take on Christopher Newport on Friday, September 18 at 7 p.m.
