ALLIANCE, Ohio – Mount Union's women's soccer team won their season opener 1-0 against Waynesburg on Tuesday evening.
Mount Union (1-0) possessed the ball in their offensive third for most of the first half, but despite their efforts, Waynesburg (0-1) was able to hold them scoreless.
The Purple Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the second half with a goal by senior
Simone Thiel (Cuyahoga Falls / Hoban) with an assist from senior
Ella Dinwiddie (Medina / Wadsworth) in the 51st minute. The Raiders looked aggressive offensively while maintaining pressure in the midfield to keep Waynesburg from creating dangerous opportunities.
The Purple Raiders continued to hold their lead throughout the remainder of the game, finishing with a 1-0 victory over Waynesburg. Mount Union's defense stayed strong and kept Waynesburg off the scoreboard, junior goalkeeper
Leanne Williams (Poland / Poland Seminary) recorded five saves in the shuout victory.
The Raiders return to action on Sunday, September 6 when they host Wisconsin-Platteville at 12:30 p.m. in Kehres Stadium.
