Softball Stranded While Being Swept By John Carrol

(ALLIANCE, OH)--Mount Union College's softball team stranded 26 runners on base as the Purple Raiders suffered losses of 1-0 in 10 innings and 8-4 to John Carroll University in a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference game Wednesday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

Mount Union falls to 14-10 overall and is 2-2 in the OAC, while John Carroll is 14-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

Michelle Murphy led off the top of the 10th inning with a double than would come around to score what turned out to be the game-winner on a two-out RBI single from Julie Marlowe as John Carroll won the opener 1-0.

Blue Streak pitcher Brittany Danilov scattered 12 Raider hits over 10 innings as Mount Union left 13 runners on base to get the win.

Devon Butler (Loudonville/Loudonville) was the hard luck loser in the circle for Mount Union as she allowed only seven hits and struck out six to take the loss.

Mount Union got an early lead in game two as Alex Lucak (Maple Heights/Trinity) led off the game with a triple then scored on an RBI single from Mara Palombaro (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney).

John Carroll came right back with a three run second inning and the Palombaro would lead off the bottom half of the frame with a single and scored on a Meghan Simons (Minerva/Minerva) double to make the score, 3-2.

The Blue Streaks again tacked on four runs in the fifth and single run in the sixth to take a commanding 8-2 lead. 

The Raiders mounted a rally in the sixth but managed only a pair of runs for the 8-4 final.

Palombaro finished the game 3-for-4 with an at the plate, while Simoms drove in two runs on two hits, but Mount Union was continued to by plagued by leaving 13 runs on base for the game.

Danilov picked up the win in relief for John Carroll, while Kellie Schmucker (Louisville/Marlington) (4-3) took the loss for the Raiders. 

Mount Union next plays Saturday at 1 p.m. at Ohio Northern University in a key OAC matchup in Ada.
