The Purple Raiders surrendered just 80 yards of total offense to
the Polar Bears and won their 91st consecutive regular-season road
game dating back to 1991.
Linebacker Judd Lutz (Tiffin/Tiffin Columbian) had a team-best
eight stops for a unit that had four sacks and an interception.
The first half featured some rare territory for Mount Union.
They trailed for the first time in a regular season game since a
21-14 loss to Ohio Northern in 2005. They were held scoreless in
the first quarter for the first time since 2006. Mount Union won
that game 14-0 against Baldwin-Wallace.
The Purple Raiders (2-0, 1-0) turned the ball over twice in the
first — both on interceptions — but Northern was only
able to convert the miscues into just three points.
Ohio Northern (1-1, 0-1) led 3-0 after the first quarter.
Mount Union ended the scoreless drought on a four-yard run by Cecil Shorts III (Cleveland/Collinwood) with 12:32 left before halftime.
This was Shorts first rushing touchdown of the young season.
The Purple Raiders took a 10-3 lead following Jay Carpenter's
(Fairmont, WV/Fairmont) 28-yard field goal a little more than four
minutes later.
It was a short-lived lead.
Ohio Northern's J.J. Mihoci returned the ensuing kickoff 88
yards to tie the game.
Mount Union recaptured the lead on a 15-yard touchdown pass from
Kurt Rocco (Cincinnati/Roger Bacon) to Kyle Miller (Elida/Elida)
with 4:57 left in the third.
It was the second time this season Rocco and Miller hooked up for a
scoring play.
The Purple Raiders increased the lead to 24-10 after Scott Panchik (Natrona Heights, PA/Highlands) scored on a 6-yard
touchdown ruh with 12:49 left in the game. Panchik led all rushers
with 145 yards and recorded his first career 100-yard game.
Mount Union closed out the scoring on a 2-yard touchdown run by
Panchik with 1:30 left in the game. It was Panchik's
first two TD game of his career.
