ALLIANCE, Ohio - The Mount Union women's swimming and diving team came out with a purpose and rolled to a 146-80 win over the Blue Streaks of John Carroll Wednesday night at the Hammond Natatorium.
Mount Union opened the meet with a win in the 400-yard medley relay (4:17.37) and never looked back, using the efforts of six different winners on the night.
Taylor Harrison (New Philadelphia/New Philadelphia) and Alyson Kolesar (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) led the Raiders with a pair of wins, while freshman Courtney Gabel (Fremont/Fremont Ross) got her first win as a Raider in the 50 free (:25.94).
Harrison picked up her victories in the 200 individual medley (2:16.42) and 100 backstroke (1:01.93). Kolesar touched first in the 200 free and 500 free with times of 2:02.22 and 5:27.03.
"This was a huge win for us. John Carroll is a big rival and we really wanted to come out and make a statement," Harrison said. "We're practicing really hard and it's showing in the pool."
Katy Alkire (Akron/Firestone) won the 100 butterfly (1:04.27) and Jennie Ciccantelli (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) claimed first in the 100 free (:56.75).
Members of the 400 medley relay were Shelbey Mitchell (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls), Victoria Ljubi (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), Alkire and Ciccantelli.
In diving, Tia Marquinez (Hudson/Walsh Jesuit) scored a personal best 355.65 while winning for the second time this season.
Assistant Coach Kristine Mann said this team has been impressive early on.
"The team has amazing chemistry," she said. "They are focused and determined to swim harder every day."
The Raiders (1-1, 0-1) will travel to Hiram for their next meet and take on the Terriers on Friday, November 12 at 5 p.m.
