LACROSSE, Wis. -- University of Mount Union senior Bill Schindel (Tallmadge/Akron Hoban), junior Derick Hesson (Dexter City/Caldwell) and sophomore Riki Reynolds (Marion/Pleasant) all were All-Americans and led the Purple Raiders to an 8th place finish at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships at the LaCrosse Center in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.
Mount Union scored 37 points to finish in a tie for 8th place which matched the Raiders finish in 1994. It was the fourth time ever the team placed at the national meet with 1974 (9th) and 1995 (10th) the other two.
Schindel finished third overall at 197, the highest finish for a Purple Raider since Dan Bobish won the national title at in 1992.
He also is just the second three-time All-American in school history and his 82 career wins ties him for sixth-best in school history.
Schindel opened a technical fall over Reid Mosquera of Johns Hopkins (Md.) in his first match then came back with a pin over William Mulligan of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) in 5:27.
In the semifinals, it appeared Schindel had scored a win but an officials decision after the final horn tied the match up and No. 2 seed Jared Massey of Augsburg got a takedown in the overtime to get the win, 11-9.
Schindel came back and scored a 9-0 major decision win over Adam Latella of Wis.-Whitewater then a 9-5 win in the third place match over Ryan Malo of Williams to take third place.
After losing his first match at 285, Hesson got a 5-2 win over Brandon Fedorka of Waynesburg (Pa.) in the consolation second round and pinned Joseph Zitone of Centenary (N.J.) in the consolation third round to get into the quarterfinals and assure himself of All-American honors. He then came back with three-straight decision wins including a 5-2 win over William Mayer of Wis.-LaCrosse in the fifth place match.
Reynolds placed sixth earning his first All-American honors in his second-straight trip to the nationals at 125 pounds.
He beat Timothy Hood of Cornell (Iowa), 9-7 in his first match then knocked off Brandon Gauthier of Rhode Island College in the championship quarterfinals. He was pinned in the championship semifinals to No. 1 seed and defending national champion Clayton Rush of Coe (Iowa). He then was pinned two more times on the day to finish in sixth place overall.
Juniors Andy Jenkins (Stow/Woodridge) at 184 and Josh Malave (Rocky River/Lutheran West) at 141 both lost in their first two matches and did not place in the tournament.
It is the first time Mount Union has had at least three All-Americans since 1995 when Dan Ambroziak (7th, 134), Jason Jones (4th, 158), Marcus Lambdin (4th, 177) and Jason Weigand (5th, HWT) all placed.
The Purple Raiders have one national champion in school history as Dan Bobish won the Heavyweight title in 1992.
