KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Mount Union softball team opened its season with a split, dropping a 2-0 decision to Coast Guard (Conn.) before claiming a 10-2 victory over Wesley (Del.), on Sunday at the Osceola County Complex.

Pitcher Sarah Woody (Uniontown/Green) recorded her first collegiate win as the Purple Raider offense backed her with a 13-hit attack against Wesley.

Woody worked four innings, recording six strikeouts and no walks in relief. She helped her cause at the plate with a triple and run scored in the seventh inning.

Mount Union (1-1) took command with a seven-run second inning. Amanda Pool (Bergholz/Edison), Mara Palombaro (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney), Marissa Earl (Massillon/Massillon Washington) and Brenna Longo (Moon, Pa./Pa) had RBI singles during the frame.

Pool, Palombaro and Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) had two hits apiece against Wesley (0-2). Earl and Carmichael scored twice.

Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) started in the circle for Mount Union and did not allow an earned run over three innings of work. She had two strikeouts and one walk.

Alex Lucak (Maple Heights/Trinity) provided the only hit -- a triple -- in the loss to Coast Guard (2-0).

Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) fired a complete game, allowing three hits and no earned runs. She finished with two strikeouts and two walks.

The Raiders will return to the diamond on Monday with games against Thomas More (Ky.) and Lake Forest (Ill.) at 1 and 3 p.m., respectively.
