Softball Sweeps Through Day Two of Rebel Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Mount Union softball team claimed two victories -- an 8-0 win over Thomas More (Ky.) and an 8-4 decision against Lake Forest (Ill.) -- in Rebel Spring Games action at the Osceola County Complex on Monday.

Brenna Longo (Plum, Pa./Plum) connected for her first collegiate home run against Lake Forest while Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) pitched in both games to earn a win and a save.

The Purple Raiders opened the day against Thomas More as McAninch fired a one-hit shutout. She worked six innings, finishing with five strikeouts and one walk.

Amanda Pool (Bergholz/Edison), Alex Lucak (Maple Heights/Trinity), Jill Rader (Ashland/Ashland) and Marissa Earl (Massillon/Massillon Washington) had two hits apiece for Mount Union. One of Earl's hits was a double. Lucak finished with two RBIs.

Rachel Jesso (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) also drove in two runs while Longo recorded two stolen bases.

The Raiders opened the scoring with three runs in the second inning. Longo and Rader had singles and then executed a double-steal which had Longo cross the plate.

Earl drove in Rader with a double and then Jesso singled to plate Earl, putting Mount Union up 3-0.

Brittany Papp (Uniontown/Green) delivered an RBI single in the third inning before Mount Union scored four runs in the sixth, ending the game via 8-run rule.

With four runs in the sixth, Mount Union (3-1) won via the 8-run rule.

McAninch and Rader led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Alex Lucak (Maple Heights/Trinity) had a two-run single while Mara Palombaro (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) smacked an RBI single of her own during the frame.

Against Lake Forest, Longo led the offense with two hits, including a blast over the center-field fence, and three RBIs. Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) also had two hits. Jesso, Pool and Lucak scored two runs apiece.

The Raiders scored their first run without recording a hit in the first inning -- Papp (Uniontown/Green) smacked a sac fly -- and then Longo hit an RBI single, helping them to a 2-0 advantage.

Palombaro, with a single, and Gromes, with a double, collected RBIs during Mount Union's 3-run third, which left the Raiders with a 5-1 lead.

Papp added an RBI single in the fourth before the Foresters battled back with three in their half of the frame, cutting the Mount Union advantage to 6-4.

Then, Longo connected for her dinger in the fifth and Lucak singled in Jesso, who had doubled, in the sixth.

Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) was the winning pitcher, but did receive help from McAninch in the sixth.

Lake Forest had runners on second and third base when Willis was pulled in favor of McAninch, who induced a double-play lineout and inning-ending groundout.

Willis finished with five innings pitched, five strikeouts and three walks, earning her second win of the season. McAninch worked two no-hit innings, recording one strikeout and one walk.

The Raiders will return to action on Tuesday with contests against Greensboro (N.C.) and Methodist (N.C.) at 3 and 5 p.m., respectively.
