Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio -- The Mount Union softball team swept an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader against Wilmington on Sunday, taking decisions of 10-0 and 6-1 at 23rd Street Field.
The Purple Raiders (11-7, 3-1) scored five runs in the second inning and four runs during the fourth as the opener ended in the fifth.
Bre Willis (Navarre/Fairless) was the winning pitcher. She allowed three hits while recording seven strikeouts and no walks in five innings of work.
Mara Palombaro (Boardman/Cardinal Mooney) batted 3-for-3 with a double and five RBIs. Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) added a 2-for-2 game with a double and three runs scored. Rachel Jesso (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) went 2-for-3.
Gromes and Palombaro combined for the first Mount Union run. Gromes led off the first inning with a double and was driven in on a two-out single by Palombaro.
In the second, Jesso and Jill Rader (Ashland/Ashland) led off with back-to-back singles; Jesso scored on a error immediately after Rader's hit.
On a ground ball hit by Willis, Rader beat a throw to the plate, giving Mount Union a 3-0 lead. Gromes and Marissa Earl (Massillon/Massillon Washington) contributed singles with Earl's driving in Willis.
Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) added an RBI groundout and Palombaro smacked an RBI single.
During the fourth, Gromes, Earl and Carmichael worked consecutive walks before Palombaro cleared the bases with a 3-run double. Palombaro's pinch-runner, Jasmine Bentley (Twinsburg/Twinsburg), then scored on a single by Jesso.
During the nightcap, Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) retired the first 12 batters she faced before Wilmington's Kaylee Cox broke up her perfect game in the fifth.
McAninch pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on three hits. She struck out eight batters and walked none.
Rader batted 3-for-3 with a homer, double and three RBIs. Carmichael also homered and drove in two runs while Gromes went 2-for-3.
In the Mount Union first, Gromes reached on an error and scored on a sac fly by Carmichael.
The Raider lead held at 1-0 until Rader hit a solo bomb over the center field fence in the fifth. Carmichael added her solo dinger in the sixth, triggering a four-run frame.
Palombaro walked, and was replaced by Yuki Hamada (Japan). Hamada then scored on a single by Brenna Longo (Moon, Pa./Moon).
Longo and Alex Mayo, who also reached with a single, finished up Mount Union's scoring on a two-run double by Rader.
The Quakers scored their only run in the seventh when Holly Sheets drove in Stacy Lunsford with a sac fly. Lunsford had reached with a double. Cox batted 2-for-3.
Until the later innings, Danielle Monnier was solid in the pitching circle for Wilmington. She finished with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Raiders will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Marietta for a 3:30 p.m. OAC doubleheader.
