Box Score WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Perhaps flipping the calendar over to 2012 is what the doctor ordered as the Mount Union's men's basketball team ended a six-game skid with a 77-46 win over Immaculata (N.Y.) at the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament. Senior Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) scored 29 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the Purple Raiders (4-7), who will face host Lycoming at 4 pm Tuesday afternoon.
A combination of efficient offense and stalwart defense were keys to the rout of the Mighty Macs. The Raiders shot 50.9-percent from the field and made a season-high 13 three-pointers on just 24 attempts. Immaculata had a difficult time getting good looks at the basket and shot just 30.2-percent from the field on the night. The Raiders also held a 26-21 advantage on the galss.
A three-pointer by T.J. Klinger brought the Mighty Macs within four points at 11-7 with 14:02 remaining in the first half, but would never get any closer. The Raiders then tallied 9 straight points and allowed a lone field goal by Immaculata the rest of the half to take a commanding 29-14 lead at halftime.
Wood, who was five-of-seven on three-point attempts, led a trio of Raiders with at least a pair of trifectas. Freshman Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) made three while fellow freshman Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) connected twice from beyond the arc. Jacubec finished with 13 points and Griffin finished with eight points.
Wood's 29 points set a Basinger Memorial Tournament record. He recorded his second double-double of the season and scored at least 29 points for the fourth time and third time in the last four games.
Junior point guard Justen Little (Galion/Galion) was scoreless but continued to provide a steady hand as the quarterback of the offense for first-year head coach Mike Fuline. Little, who ranks second in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio, recorded six assists while turning the ball over just once.
Immaculata (3-8) dropped their fourth consecutive game. Junior Nelson Torres paced the Mighty Macs with 11 points and Kendall Peters added nine points. They will face Penn State-Abington in the consolation game tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm.
Mount Union will face unbeaten Lycoming (11-0) in the championship game after the Warriors defeated Penn State-Abington, 106-73, in today's other semifinal matchup. LIVE STATS and AUDIO will be available for the championship game.
