Men's Basketball

Fuline, Men's Basketball Begin OAC Tournament with Trip to Ohio Northern

The Mount Union men's basketball team seeks its first victory in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament since 2005 when the No. 7 seed Purple Raiders travel to No. 6 seed Ohio Northern for a first round Monday at 7:30 pm in Ada, Ohio. This is the first year of the renovated conference tournament that rewards regular play by giving the top two seeds a double-bye to the semfinals. With a win, the Purple Raiders would travel to No. 3 seed Marietta Tuesday night for a quarterfinal game.

The Purple Raiders (11-14, 7-11 OAC) hope the third time is the charm as they look to extend their third three-game winning streak of the season to four for the first time this year. Monday night's game is a short turnaround for the Raiders, who needed overtime to complete a double-digit comeback at Heidelberg on Saturday. Senior forward Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) played like a man not ready for his collegiate career to conclude, leading the way with a career-high 39 points in the 91-89 victory.

First-year head coach Mike Fuline will try to carry that momentum into the conference tournament against a foe they have defeated twice already this season, including just a week ago in Alliance by a score of 67-57. The Raiders outscored the Polar Bears 138-123 during their two earlier meetings, including a 17-point advantage in the first half of those games.

Mount Union had one of the conference's top defenses during the regular season, holding opponents to a conference-best 65.3 points per game. The Raiders are second in the conference in field goal percentage defense (.425) and turnovers forced (14.9). Stellar defense has allowed the Raiders to win games, as they are the OAC's ninth-best scoring team at just 65.4 points per game.

Wood, one of only two seniors on the squad, is enters the postseason as the top scorer in the conference at 18.4 points per game. The versatile forward leads the team in rebounding at 5.4 rebounds per game and is one of three Raiders who have made at least 40 three-pointers (62).

Freshmen guards Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) and Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson) continued their steady play down the stretch, combining for 24 points in the win over Heidelberg on Saturday. Jacubec is second in the team in scoring at 11.8 points per game, followed by Griffin's 9.2 points per game.

Junior point guard Justen Little (Galion/Galion) delivered a career-high 15 points in Saturdays' win and is second in the OAC in assists at 3.4 per game while leading the conference with a four-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio.

Ohio Northern (12-13, 8-10 OAC) enters as losers of two of their last three games, including a 73-65 loss at Baldwin-Wallace on Saturday. The Polar Bears are looking to win an OAC Tournament for the first time since 2009 after losing in the first round each of the past two years. They score 67.9 points per game while allowing opponents to score 67.8 points per game on the season.

Senior center Scott Schnelle, who is the conference's tallest player at 6-9, averages 13.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game on the season to lead the way for the Polar Bears. Sophomore guard Branden Rushton gets 13.7 points per game to be the team's top scorer. Guards Jared Horstman, Taylor Kohlman, and Jordan Martin along with forward Dominique Royal and center Adam Bair all average at least five points per game for the Polar Bears.

The Series

This will be the 85th meeting all-time between Mount Union and Ohio Northern. The Polar Bears hold a decisive 54-30 advantage overall in the series and have won four of five meetings in the OAC Tournament all-time. However, the Raiders have been victorious in five of the past seven meetings, including a regular season sweep this year.
