Box Score 2 CHICAGO, Ill. – The 18th-ranked Mount Union volleyball team lost to the 11th-ranked University of Chicago but responded with a win over 21st-ranked Carthage College (Wis.) to open up play at the Gargoyle Classic in Chicago, Ill., on Friday night.
The loss to Chicago snapped a seven-game winning streak for the Purple Raiders. However, the win over Carthage marked their second win over a ranked opponent this season. They knocked off Juniata (Pa.), which was ranked 12th in the nation at the time, a week ago today (Sept. 14). The win over Juniata was the beginning of a perfect 3-0 weekend at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio. The Raiders hope their success after defeating a ranked opponent continues this weekend in Chicago when they finish up play at the Gargoyle Classic tomorrow against Defiance and Scranton (Pa.).
In the opener, the Raiders lost to Chicago, 3-2 (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 9-15). The win improved Chicago's overall record to 11-2 and marked its fifth consecutive victory. The Maroons have not suffered a defeat since Sept. 8, when they lost in straight sets to number-four Hope (Mich.).
In the second and final match of the evening, Mount Union topped Carthage in three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-16). Carthage, which fell to 6-5 with the loss, entered the tournament fresh off a tough five-set loss to 12th-ranked Elmhurst (Ill.) on Sept. 18.
Mount Union (11-4) wraps up play at the Gargoyle Classic tomorrow afternoon. The Raiders play Defiance at 10 a.m. and Scranton (Pa.) at 12 p.m. After their stay in Chicago, the Raiders will have a week off before opening Ohio Athletic Conference play at home against Ohio Northern on Sept. 29 at 4 p.m.
