Box Score COLUMBUS, Ohio - - Rachel McAninch (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) threw her seventh shutout of the season as the Mount Union softball team defeated John Carroll 5-0 in an Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament game Friday morning at Clowson Field.
With the win, Mount Union improves to 23-11 on the year while John Carroll falls to 25-10.
McAninch struck out 10 to earn her 14th victory of the season.
The game would remain scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Andi VanSickle (West Jefferson/West Jefferson) smacked her first home run of the season to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead.
Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning as she hit her fifth home run of the season over the right center field fence.
John Carroll would have its best scoring chance of the game in the sixth inning as they had runners on second and third with one out but McAninch got Colleen Brady to pop out to shortstop and stuck out Michaela Mackey to end the inning.
Kristen Gromes (Navarre/Fairless) extended the Raiders lead to 5-0 in the top of the seventh inning as she launched a three-run home run over the right field fence.
McAninch shut down the Blue Streaks in order in the bottom of the seven inning as the Raiders would go on for the 5-0 victory.
Mount Union advances to play the winner of the number one seed Capital and the number four seed Marietta at 2:00 p.m.
