Men's Basketball: Mount Union Makes Record 17 Three-Pointers in 113-75 Win Over Westminster

ALLIANCE, Ohio – On a frigid night outside, the Mount Union men's basketball team was hot inside as the Purple Raiders made a school-record 17 three-pointers in a 113-75 win over Westminster (Pa.) at the McPherson Academic and Athletic Complex in Alliance.

The 113 points matches a season-high as Mount Union (9-2) extends its winning streak to seven games.

Five Raiders scored in double figures, led by junior guard Nate Jacubec (Struthers/Struthers) with 19 points on five three-pointers.  

Sophomore Kyle Scelza (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) had 18, seniors T.J. Gillespie (Toledo/Toledo St. John's) and Jimmy Darnley (Canton/GlenOak) had 14 and 10 respectively and sophomore Jarrett Ruffin(Northfield/Nordonia) also had 10 points for Mount Union.

Paul Carswell had a game-high 20 points to lead Westminster (1-9).

Gillespie hit his first three three-point attempts to spark a 16-4 Mount Union run in the game's opening three minutes.  Westminster responded with a 7-2 burst to close to within seven points, 18-11 with 15:18 left in the half, but the Raiders stayed hot from the floor making a total of 12 three-pointers in the period to lead 64-38 at the break.

Westminster got no closer than 24 points the rest of the way as Mount Union matched a season-high total that it had in a 113-100 win over John Carroll on Dec. 4

Mount Union next plays Capital in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Monday at 7 pm in Bexley.
