Box Score

ALLIANCE, Ohio – No. 3 ranked Mount Union won its 90th straight regular season game with a 74-7 rout of Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday at Mount Union Stadium in Alliance.

Senior quarterback Kevin Burke (Westlake/Lakewood St. Edward) threw for three scores and ran in another in just over a quarter of work to lead the Purple Raiders to a 7-0 (6-0 OAC) start to the season.

Burke tossed two scores to Taurice Scott (Alliance/Alliance) and one to Roman Namdar (Southlake, Texas/Carroll).

Edward Ruhnke (Bayville, N.J./Central Regional) matched an OAC record kicking five field goals including matching a school-record with a 47-yarder.

Logan Nemeth (McBain, Mich./McBain), Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) and Brandon Williams (Oakland, Calif./Livermore) each had rushing touchdowns.

The remainder of the scoring came on a 51-yard touchdown pass from freshman quarterback David Burkes (New Castle, Pa./Neshannock) to Tim Kennedy (Hudson/Hudson) and a 31-yard field goal from Jefferson Lee (New Castle, Va./Craig County).

The Mount Union defense held the Quakers to 180 total yards and forced three turnovers – three fumbles and an interception from Tre Jones (Twinsburg/Twinsburg).

Mount Union scored 28 points in the game's opening six minutes that included scoring three touchdowns on three consecutive offensive snaps.

The Raiders took the opening kick of the game and drove 54 yards on nine plays as Mitchell ran in from five yards out to make it 7-0.

After Wilmington went three-and-out on its first possession, Mount Union scored in two plays as Burke hit Scott on a 37-yard touchdown pass.

Wilmington then fumbled deep in its own territory on back-to-back drives and the Raiders had a pair of one-play drives after each fumble as Williams had a 10-yard run and Burke had an eight-yard run.

Mount Union got two more touchdowns – a 29-yard Burke TD pass to Namdar and a Nemeth 10-yard run to lead 42-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Ruhnke kicked his school-record tying 47-yard field goal in the first minute of the second quarter.

Burke then hit Scott on a 17-yard scoring strike before Ruhnke booted two more field goals from 18 and 19 yards to extend the lead to 58-0 with 3:28 left before halftime.

Wilmington avoided the shutout as quarterback Brandon Mitchell hit Tyrik Burns on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 41 seconds left in the period.

Mount Union came right back and scored in 16 seconds as Burkes hit Kennedy for his first career touchdown pass and it was 65-7 at the half.

In the third quarter, two more Ruhnke field goals from 30 and 25 yards out pushed the lead to 71-7 and allowed him to tie the conference mark set by Brad Marchese of John Carroll in 2009 against Marietta.

Lee finished up the scoring with his first collegiate field goal with 9:15 remaining for the 74-7 final.

Mount Union plays its next two games on the road – at Otterbein next Sat., Nov. 1 at 1:30 pm and at Baldwin Wallace, Nov. 8 at 1:30 pm.
