Softball: Mount Union Gets Third Straight Conference Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Mount Union's softball team split a pair Ohio Athletic Conference games with John Carroll winning the first game 6-3 then falling in game two 11-0 in five innings Tuesday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders are 9-7-1 overall and 3-3 in the OAC while John Carroll is 8-8 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

In the first inning of the opener, Mount Union took advantage of a pair of John Carroll errors and got two big triples – one that drove in a single run from Shelby Carmichael (Dalton/Dalton) and another that drove in three runs from Leigh Siedlak (Westerville/Westerville South) to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

John Carroll got on the board with a run in the third on a Morgan Robinson solo home run to make it 6-1.

The Blue Streaks rallied with a run in the sixth and had two runners on with the tying run in the on deck circle with no outs before Raider pitcher Michelle Stiltner (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland) struck out the side.

In the seventh, John Carroll rallied again this time pushing a run across and bringing the tying run to plate with two runners on before Stiltner forced a game ending ground-out.

Stiltner posted a season-high 10 strikeouts and improved to 7-2 on the season with the complete game victory.

Rachel Byrnes gave up just five hits in taking the loss pitching for the Blue Streaks.

Byrnes (6-4) got it back in game two as she got the complete game shutout victory allowing just four Mount Union hits and striking out six in John Carroll's 11-0 shutout win in five innings.

The Blue Streaks scored two runs in the first, two runs in the fourth and put the game out of reach with a seven-run fifth.

Megan Okuda (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland) had a double while Erin Simmons (Suffield/Field) took the loss pitching for the Raiders.

Mount Union is back on the field Wednesday at 3 pm in a non-conference matchup against Case Western Reserve at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
