Box Score CORTLAND, N.Y. – Mount Union's women's lacrosse team saw its season come to an end with a 20-5 loss to No. 1 ranked SUNY Cortland in the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship Saturday in Cortland, N.Y.
The Purple Raiders, just in their second season as a varsity sport, finish with a 16-3 record. Mount Union, a team with just one upperclassman on the roster, won the inaugural Ohio Athletic Conference regular season and conference tournament titles.
Cortland improves to 20-0 overall as the Red Dragons have now won 54-straight home games and advance to next weekend's regionals (round of 16).
Cortland ran out to a 9-0 lead in the game's opening 11 minutes before Mount Union got on the board as Emily Sendker (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster Central) scored off a feed from Taylor Pensyl (Kent/Kent Roosevelt).
Just under three minutes later, Cortland put another score on the board to push the lead to 10-1 before Katherine Doraty (Medina/Medina) scored an unassisted goal to make it 10-2.
The Dragons scored four goals to finish the half and lead 14-2 at the break.
Cortland opened the second half with four more goals to extend the leads to 18-2.
Sendker then scored her second goal of the game for the Raiders third goal of the game.
Cortland would score again before Susie Kraus (Sewickley, Pa./Quaker Valley) tallied a score for Mount Union to leave the score at 19-4.
The Dragons tallied one last goal before Pensyl scored for the 20-5 final.
