Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union's women's basketball team defeated Defiance, 73-54, in a non-conference match up Friday.
Leading the Purple Raiders (7-2, 3-1 OAC) in points was Katie Reed (Alliance/Marlington) with 19 while Sarah Grippi (Venetia, Pa./Vincentian Academy) led in rebounds with nine.
Reed gave the Raiders a strong start giving them a 14-4 lead with 6:43 left in the first quarter. Mount Union extended their lead by 17 points to end the quarter 24-9.
The second quarter was much of the same when the Raiders took a 25 point lead over the Yellow Jackets at the 6:08 mark. Defiance would cut it to a 20 point lead with 3:37 left. Mount Union would take their biggest lead of the game, 43-17, at the 2:53 mark. The Raiders would leave the half winning 43-21.
The Raiders came out in the third quarter with the first four points bringing the lead back up to 26. The Yellow Jackets would come within 22 at the 7:00 mark. Mount Union wouldn't let Defiance come within 20 points of them in the whole third quarter. The Raiders would end the quarter winning 56-36.
Mount Union let Defiance come within 15 points of them in the fourth quarter but with a jump shot made by Colleen Kennehan (Berlin Center/Western Reserve) and a three pointer from Reed they would get back to a 20 point lead. The Raiders would end the game defeating Defiance 73-54.
Mount Union will compete in the Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) Tournament in Nashville, Tennessee December 29-30 against Meredith (N.C.) and Babson (Mass.).
