Football: #1 Mount Union Picks Off Ohio Northern in Ada

ADA, Ohio – No. 1 ranked Mount Union picked off Ohio Northern 38-21 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game Saturday in Ada.

The Purple Raiders had three interceptions – all in the first half – one returned by Danny Robinson (Massillon/Massillon Washington) 100 yards for a score as the defense helped Mount Union get out to a 21-7 halftime lead.

Robinson also had a team-best 11 tackles to lead a defense that had 7.0 tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, blocked a pair of kicks and recovered a fumble in the end zone.

Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) ran for 129 yards on 23 carries to go over 100 yards for the fourth straight game and 16th of his career to lead the Raider offense.

Mount Union quarterbacks Luke Poorman (Orlando, Fla./University School) and D'Angelo Fulford (Cooper City, Fla./Mirmar) combined to go 20-of-27 for 207 yards with a touchdown.

Tim Kennedy (Hudson/Hudson) caught 11 of those a passes – a new career high – for 76 yards and Jordan Hargrove (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) four catches for 83 yards with a touchdown.

Northern quarterback Will Freed completed 28-of-51 passes for 337 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions, Malachi Nolletti had six catches for 127 yards with a score and running back Christaan Williams rushed for 128 yards on 22 carries.

The win improved Mount Union to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC while Ohio Northern falls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the OAC. It was the Raiders 109th straight road win and 107th straight regular season win.

Ohio Northern turned the ball over on downs at the Raiders' 16 on the opening possession, Mount Union drove 84 yards and capped its opening drive with a one-yard run from Mitchell.

The Polar Bears moved into Mount Union territory again but Robinson picked off a pass on the goal line and returned it 100 yards for a score that made it 14-0.

Northern's third drive resulted in a field goal attempt that was blocked by Kenny Wilder (Medina/Medina) and the Raiders marched down the field as Poorman hit Hargrove on a 53-yard TD pass leaving it 21-0 after one quarter.

The Bears next two drives ended in interceptions from Darrell Sullins (Beachwood/Beachwood) and Austin White (Wadsworth/Wadsworth).

Northern got on the board on a 41-yard screen pass from Freed to David Haseleu to close to within 21-7 at the break.

Mount Union took the opening drive of the second half 75 yards on 11 plays as Fulford ran in a score from six yards out to increase the lead to 28-7.

On the ensuing drive, Northern lost 10 yards on three plays and the punt went over the punter, who recovered it in the end zone but fumbled it and Steve Tracy (Plymouth, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) recovered it for a Mount Union touchdown and a 35-7 lead.

Freed then threw his second touchdown pass of the day – an 18-yarder to Chad Rex and it was 35-14.

Ohio Northern made 35-21 as Freed hit Malachi Nolletti on a 13-yard touchdown pass with just under 13 minutes to play.

Mount Union kicker Alex Louthan (Loganville, Ga./Grayson) finished the scoring with a 35-yard field goal.

The Raiders return home next week to host Heidelberg for homecoming Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1:30 p.m. at Mount Union Stadium.
