BALTIMORE, Md. – No. 8 ranked Mount Union rallied for 28-21 win at No. 6 ranked Johns Hopkins in the second round of the NCAA Division III Football Championship Saturday at Homewood Field in Baltimore.

Mount Union (11-1) advances to the national quarterfinals and will play No. 15 Alfred (N.Y.) – a 30-24 winner over Western New England -- next Saturday, Dec. 3 at noon at a site to be announced Sunday.

Freshman quarterback Dom Davis (Akron/St. Vincent-St. Mary) completed 15-of-26 passes for 159 yards with two touchdowns both to Jared Ruth (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike).

Ruth had five catches for 75 yards and his 30-yard touchdown catch early in the fourth quarter turned out to be the game winner.

Mount Union grinded out 222 yards on the ground as running backs Bradley Mitchell (Detroit, Mich./South Lake) and Dwayne Aaron (Cleveland/Lakewood St. Edward) both rushed for 64 yards and Jawanza Evans-Morris (Coral Springs, Fla./Taravella) had a rushing touchdown.

Mount Union allowed 269 yards in the first half but the defense clamped down in the second half held to 38 yards in third quarter and 5.0 sacks in the second half.

Danny Robinson (Massillon/Massillon Washington) had 10 stops and Mike Vidal (Miami, Fla./Ronald Regan Doral) had three sacks

Johns Hopkins (11-1) quarterback Jon Germano was 30-for-49 for 355 yards with three touchdown passes.

Mount Union drove 65 yards on the game's opening possession and took a 7-0 lead with a 21-yard pass from Davis to Ruth.

Hopkins answered with a 13-play scoring drive of its own as Germano threw a two-yard pass to Brett Caggiano to tie the game at 7-7.

After forcing Mount Union to punt, Hopkins took a 14-7 lead when Germano hit Ryan Cary on a 62-yard touchdown pass – the longest pass play the Raiders have allowed all year.

The score remained 14-7 until the 4:34 mark of the second quarter when Hopkins marched 66 yards on 10 plays and Germano threw his third TD pass of the half – second one to Caggiano – that gave the Blue Jays a 21-7 lead.

Mount Union came back as Davis engineered a 12-play, 63-yard drive that was capped with a three-yard run from Evans-Morris to make it 21-14 at the half.

The Raiders held Hopkins to a punt on the first possession of the second half and tied the game on a 14-play drive that Davis finished off with a four-yard run for a score.

The Raider defense got field position by getting a three-and-out and punt into the wind allowed to take over on the Hopkins 30-yard line and on the very next play Davis hit Ruth on a touchdown pass to give Mount Union its first lead since the first quarter, 28-21.
