ALLIANCE, Ohio- Mount Union's softball team opened up Ohio Athletic Conference play splitting a pair of games with Baldwin Wallace Saturday, March 26 at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.

The Purple Raiders (13-9, 1-1 OAC) lost a close one in the first game, 7-6 then defeated Baldwin Wallace (6-8, 1-1 OAC) 12-6 in the second game.

In game one, both teams scored runs in the first inning.

The Yellow Jackets then had two big innings scoring two runs in the top of the third and four runs in the top of the fourth to make the score 7-1.

Mount Union got two runs in the bottom of the fifth off of two Baldwin Wallace errors to close to 7-3.

A one-out, pinch hit double by Brittany Helmink (North Ridgeville/North Ridgeville) sparked the seventh inning for the Raiders.

Helmink was lifted for pinch runner Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) and she scored on an RBI single by Jordan Tull (Twinsburg/Twinsburg).

Brittany Baitt (Painsville/Riverside) then reached on an error that allowed Tull to score.

Jordan Kramer (Mentor/Mentor) then singled making the score 7-6 but Baldwin Wallace held on for the win.

Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) took the loss in the circle for Mount Union allowing nine hits and having five strikeouts.

In the second, the Yellow Jackets scored the first three runs of the game in the top of the first.

Mount Union tied the game up, 3-3, in the bottom of the third off RBI's from Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville), Jessica Calhoun (Brunswick/Brunswick) and Jessica Kennedy (Beach City/Fairless).

Baldwin Wallace then took the lead back in the top of the fourth with two runs, but Mount Union would respond later in the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth and three more in the bottom of the sixth.

The Yellow Jackets scored one more run in the seventh until Mount Union took home the win.

On the mound, Erin Simmons (Suffied/Field) got the win for the Raiders and only allowed six hits and had three strikeouts to improve her record to 7-1.  

Mount Union hosts Wooster in a non-conference double-header, Thursday March 31 starting at 3:30 pm.
