Softball: Mount Union Splits a Pair of OAC Games With Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio- Mount Union's softball team split a pair of games with Ohio Athletic Conference opponent Ohio Northern.

The Purple Raiders lost a close game one 8-7 but came back and defeated the Polar Bears in the second game 8-5 which makes their record 19-13 overall and 5-5 in the OAC while Ohio Northern is 15-13 overall and 5-5 in the OAC.

In game one, Ohio Northern came out with a four run inning in the bottom of the first.

Logan Lehman (Orrville/Orrville) then had a single run homerun in the top of the second making the score 4-1 Ohio Northern. The Raiders could not score anymore in the second while the Polar Bears then scored two more in the bottom and one more in the bottom of the third.

Lehman then scored on a wild pitch form Ohio Northern in the top of the fourth with the Polar Bears up 6-2.

The Raiders scored two more runs in the top of the sixth on two errors from the Polar Bears making the score 8-4, Ohio Northern.

Mount Union scored two more runs in the top of the seventh with a Jordan Kramer (Mentor/Mentor) double to left field running in Brittany Baitt (Painsville/Riverside) and Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless) with the Raiders down 8-6. Kramer would then score in an error making the score 8-7 Ohio Northern.

The Raiders could not pull out the win losing 8-7 to the Polar Bears.

Allie Scali (Parma/Parma) took the loss with eight strikeouts making her record 9-8 on the season.

In game two, Jessica Calhoun got the Raiders going with a sacrifice fly running in Baitt for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Kramer and Andi Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) both scored on an error.

Shleby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) then singled to center field with a 2 RBI leading the Polar Bears 5-0.

Ohio Northern scored a run in the bottom of the third making the score 5-1.

The Raiders kept their big lead with Andi Vansickle scoring on a throw in the top of the fifth and a single RBI from Torie Gable (Norton/Norton) leading Ohio Northern 7-1.

The Polar Bears then scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth trying to catch up with the Raiders.

Jenna Liles (Sterling/Norwayne) then scored the Raiders one run in the top of the seventh making the score 8-3. Ohio Northern then scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh but could not tie the game up to go in extra innings.

Erin Simmons (Suffied/Field) won her 10th game of the season with five strikeouts making her record 10-3.

Mount Union next hosts Capital Saturday, April 16 for an OAC doubleheader at 1:00 pm in Alliance.
