Softball: Mount Union Sweeps Wooster with Late Comeback in Game Two

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WOOSTER, Ohio – Mount Union's softball team swept Wooster (12-22, 4-8 NCAC) in a pair of non-conference games Thursday afternoon.

In game one, the Purple Raiders (15-21, 6-10 OAC) got on the board early as Allie Goldy (Painesville/Riverside) scored off a throwing error by the catcher in the top of the second. Goldy was previously on base with a single and was then moved around the bases on a sacrifice bunt from Maggie Dominick (Denison/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) and a Maddie Pidgeon (Salem/West Branch) single to center.

Mount Union scored again in the top of the third, all while having two outs. Brittany Baitt (Painesville/Riverside) singled up the middle and then proceeded to steal second base, bringing up Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa./Charleroi). Riley knocked one up the middle to score Baitt, then advanced to second on an error. Goldy then got her second hit with an RBI single down the right field line to send Riley home, extending their lead to 3-0.

Wooster recorded a run in the bottom half of the third, and it would be their only run, with a solo home run from Marina Roski. The box score would not see a run for the remainder of the inning as Mount Union would take game one, 3-1.

From the circle, Jordan Tull (Brewster/Fairless) got the start and the win, moving her record to 3-6, while allowing just one run on three hits. Shelby Vansickle (Loudonville/Loudonville) came in as relief in the bottom of the fifth to get her first save without giving up a run on five hits.

In game two, Wooster struck first with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning and then again in the third off an error to take a 2-0 lead.

Mount Union had only tabbed one hit through three innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Riley singled down the left field line and then a single up the middle by Dominick gave her enough time to cross home plate, making the score 2-1.

After a silent fifth inning, Wooster tabbed another run in the bottom of the sixth on yet another error and stretch their lead to 3-1.

In the top of the seventh, looking to make a come back, the Raiders loaded the bases in three straight batters; Pidgeon hit by pitch, Vansickle singled, and a Jordan Kramer (Mentor/Mentor) bunt. With zero outs, Savannah Miner (Louisville/Louisville) doubled to left-center field to drive home Pidgeon and Vansickle. Now tied, Wooster made back-to-back defensive plays to quickly get two outs.

With Miner on second and now Baitt on first, getting on with a walk, Riley doubled to deep left field to clear the bases and give Mount Union the 5-3 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.

Bottom of the seventh, Wooster got two runners on in a hurry but by combination of a sac-bunt and a double play, Mount Union would seal the game and win 5-3.

Senior pitcher Jenna Liles (Sterling/Norwayne) started the game in the circle, but was relieved by Vansickle after four innings pitched while allowing two runs on five hits. Vansickle, in her second pitching appearance of the day, received the win to improve to 3-1 on the year while giving up just one run on five hits.

Mount Union will close out the 2018 season with a conference doubleheader against Capital for Senior Day and their StrikeOut Cancer event on Saturday, April 28 starting at 1:00 p.m.
