Football: #2 Mount Union Kicks Capital on Homecoming

ALLIANCE – No. 2 Mount Union had a history making day while defeating Capital 66-0 on homecoming at Mount Union Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Senior quarterback D'Angelo Fulford (Miramar, Fla.) and senior wide receiver Justin Hill (Circleville) hooked up three times for touchdowns in the first half. Fulford threw for five touchdowns before halftime on 11-of-14 passing for 213 yards. Hill caught seven passes for 185 yards.

The five touchdowns by Fulford gave him 27 on the season and 118 for his career, which tied him for third most in school history with Jim Ballard (1991-93). Hill's three touchdowns pushed his career total to 53 and put him into second place all-time at Mount Union behind Cecil Shorts (2007-10), who has 63 receiving touchdowns.

Senior kicker Cory Barnett (Grove City/Teays Valley) kicked five field goals, fellow senior Max Righetti (Salem) kicked another field goal for a total of six which tied the NCAA Division III record for field goals in a game with fellow former Raiders Edward Ruhnke and Jefferson Lee, who combined for kick six in a game against Wilmington in 2014.

Mount Union (6-0, 5-0 OAC) scored 27 points in the first quarter and never looked back. Fulford opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Evan Weygandt (New Lenox, Ill.,/Lincoln-Way West).  Junior running back Josh Petruccelli (Perry) made it 13-0 with a 2-yard run. Fulford threw two more touchdowns to Hill and Wayne Ruby, Jr., (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Flanagan), respectively to close out the first quarter scoring.

The Purple Raiders didn't waste time getting back into the end zone in the second quarter. Fulford found Hill with a 26-yard scoring pass to make it 34-0. Less than two minutes later, senior wide receiver Derrick Harvey, Jr., (Akron/Buchtel) caught a 29-yard pass from Fulford for a 41-0 lead.

Freshman quarterback Braxton Plunk (Plant City, Fla.) took over for Fulford and found Hill for a 33-yard touchdown with 7:36 left before halftime to give Mount Union a 48-0 lead. closed out the first half scoring with a 23-yard field goal.

Mount Union's defense held Capital (0-6, 0-5 OAC) to just two first downs and 71 total yards before halftime. Senior linebacker Trey Williams (Cardington/Cardington-Lincoln) had five tackles and junior linebacker Kordell Ford (Massillon/Washington) had an interception in the first quarter.

Senior linebacker Heath Snyder (Loudonville) had an interception in the third quarter which set up a 22-yard field goal by Barnett to make the score 54-0. Barnett added his third field goal with 6:53 left in the third to stretch the lead to 57-0.

Barnett added two more field goals to give Mount Union a 63-0 lead and Righetti closed out the scoring with a 27-yard field goal.

The Purple Raiders outgained Capital 669-101 for the game and forced three turnovers to record its second shutout of the season.

Mount Union next travels to Tiffin to take on Heidelberg next Saturday.
