Softball: Raiders Sweep Wilmington in OAC Tilt; Win Streak Stretches to Five

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union's softball team swept Wilmington 3-1 and 9-8 in Ohio Athletic Conference competition Thursday at 23rd Street Field.  

The Purple Raiders run their win streak win five games and move to 19-15 overall and 7-9 in the OAC while Wilmington drops to 17-13 and 5-11 in conference play. 

Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) registered four combined hits including two home runs between both games while four different Raiders recorded two or more hits in game two to headline the offense.

Wilmington got on the board in the opening frame in game one with an RBI single to take a quick 1-0 lead before Pidgeon blasted a homer to tie the game.

Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) hit an RBI single that gave the Raiders a 2-1 lead in the second.

Pidgeon belted another home run in the third to make it 3-1.

Wilmington loaded the bases in the seventh but the Raider defense shut the door on a comeback attempt to take the 3-1 victory.

Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) pitched 6.2 innings striking out two batters in line for the win while Alexandra Pasco (Wadsworth / Highland) picked up the save fanning one batter.

The Quakers plated three runs to begin game two to take a 3-0 lead. Wilmington later added three more runs in the second to make it 6-0.

An RBI single in the third for Wilmington shifted the score to 7-0.

The Raiders got on the board with an RBI triple from Hellman to shrink the deficit to 7-1.

Mount Union scored three runs in the fifth sparked by RBI singles from Natalie Martin (Millersburg / West Holmes) and Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indian Valley) to cut the lead to 7-4.

Wilmington got a run back in the sixth to make the score 8-4.

The Raiders rallied to tie the game at eight scoring four runs in the seventh highlighted by a pinch-hit two-run home run by Morgan Riley (Charleroi, Pa. / Charleroi). 

Riley delivered in the ninth with a walk-off RBI single for the 9-8 victory.

Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) came in relief for the Raiders pitching 6.0 innings of work striking out one batter and only allowed three hits for the win.

Mount Union travels to Ohio Wesleyan on Wednesday, April 23 for a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader in Delaware, Ohio.
