Women's Lacrosse: Mount Union Soaks Kenyon in Season Opener

Mount Union's women's lacrosse team beat Kenyon 18-10 on a rainy Tuesday in the 2020 season opener at Mount Union Stadium.

Danielle Rohrman (Olney, Md. / Sherwood) had five goals, Sydney Bumbarger (Newbury Park, Calif.) and Mackenzie Pensyl (Kent / Roosevelt) each had three goals while Kaitlyn Murphy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) and MacKenzie Lewis (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) each had two goals to lead the Purple Raiders (1-0).

Kenyon out-shot Mount Union 37-32 but Raider goalkeeper Molly McGinnis (Brunswick) had 16 saves and led a defense against a Ladies squad that came in averaging 20 goals a game.

Kenyon (2-1) got three goals from Avery Morgan in taking its first loss of the season.

Mount Union started the scoring on a goal from Lewis 1:41 into the contest. Kenyon came back and scored four goals over the next 10 minutes, the final two from Mahoney to take a 4-1 lead.

Rohrman scored her first goal with 17:45 left in the first half but Kenyon answered with a score 1:16 later and the Ladies led 5-2.

Mount Union then went on a 5-0 run with two goals from Bumbarger, one from Rohrman and scores from Murphy and Julia Bates (East Lyme, Conn.) as the Raiders took a 7-5 lead two minutes before the break.

Kenyon scored again before Rohrman got one past the goalkeeper 26 seconds before halftime and the Raiders took an 8-6 lead into the lockers.

Mount Union took control outscoring Kenyon 6-1 to start the second half. The Raider goals came from Pensyl and Rohrman with two and one each from Bumbarger and Madi Karr (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter) as Mount Union led 13-7 with 18 minutes left.

Kenyon scored a minute later but the Raiders responded with five more goals on scores from Murphy, Rohrman, Sam Karr (Newark, Del. / Newark Charter), Pensyl and Lewis to push the lead to 18-8 with six minutes left.

Kenyon tacked two late goals for the 18-10 final.

Mount Union is back in action Saturday, Feb. 29 at 1 p.m. playing at Fredonia State in Fredonia, N.Y.
