Softball: Raiders Win Streak Continues With Another Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Mount Union softball team won a pair of games in day five of The Spring Games Wednesday afternoon at Hancock Park.

The Purple Raiders (8-2) extend their win streak to six with a 13-3 win over Dominican (Ill.) (5-7) and a 4-3 win over Emmanuel (Mass.) (2-4).

Against Dominican (Ill.), the Stars scored in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead but Raiders retaliated with back-to-back sacrifice flyouts from junior Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) and sophomore Alyssa Rose (Madison) to score junior Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) and freshman Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch). To round out the first inning, sophomore Hanna Ingram (Stow) singled to bring junior Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) home to put the Raiders up 3-1. Dominican added two runs in the second and third inning to tie the game at 3-3. Mount Union scored 10 more runs before ending the game in the fifth inning, 13-3. Runs came from, Rose, freshman Olivia Lombardo (New Castle, Pa. / Laurel), Heath, Pidgeon, freshman Emily Ungrady (Kirtland),  and junior Savannah Miner (Louisville).

In the mound, sophomore Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) earned her first win of the season pitching three innings, with three runs off eight hits with zero walks and two strikeouts.

Pidgeon headlined game two against Emmanuel (Mass.) with a double for three RBIs in the seventh inning to give Mount Union its first lead of the game 4-2. The Saints recorded a home run in the bottom of the seventh but it wouldn't be enough giving the Raiders the 4-3 win.

Sophomore pitcher Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) (2-0) gained her second win of the season giving up three runs off five hits, with zero walks, and two strikeouts in seven innings.

The Raiders continue play tomorrow March 12 taking on Wheaton (Ill.) and Ithaca (N.Y.) at 4 and 6 p.m in Minneola, Fla.
