Women's Lacrosse: Mount Union Beats the Berg in Home Opener

ALLIANCE – Mount Union's women's lacrosse team beat Heidelberg 20-3 in and Ohio Athletic Conference matchup and the home opener Saturday at Mount Union Stadium.

Nine different players scored as the Purple Raiders were led by five goals from Sydney Bumbarger (Newbury Park, Calif.), four from Eden Kesler (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) and two by Kaitlyn Murphy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County), Ashley Carr (Livonia, N.Y.) and Sam Karr (Newark, Del./Newark Charter) which moved their record to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the OAC.

Heidelberg, which got a goals from Kelly Spence, Dana Dudley and Brianna Lloyd, fell to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the OAC.

Kesler started the scoring with a goal just over five minutes into the contest. Bumbarger scored a pair of goals in a span of 42 seconds and the Raiders pushed the lead to 3-0 with 21:28 remaining. Karr and Murphy both netted goals and the lead stood at 5-0 with just over 19 minutes left in the first half. Brenna Duke (Hollywood, Md. / Leonardtown) intercepted a Heidelberg pass and took it all the way back for goal that made it 6-0 with 17:12 before halftime. Bumbarger tacked on two more goals as Mount Union went up 8-0 with 6:13 left before halftime.

Heidelberg got on the board with a goal from Kelly Spence at the 5:53 mark to make it 8-1 but Mount Union put on three more scores from Carr, Julia Bates (East Lyme, Conn.) and Kesler to lead 11-1 at the break.

Mount Union got two more goals in the opening three minutes of the second half on a man-up goal from Carr and a score from Murphy to push the lead to 13-1. Bumbarger then got her fifth goal of the day on an assist from Kesler then Kesler scored on her own and the lead moved to 15-1. Mackenzie Lewis (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) then cracked the scoring column off the second assist of the day for Bates and Mount Union led 16-1.

Dana Dudley scored on a free position shot for Heidelberg to make it 16-2 with just over 18 minutes to go. Carr nabbed her fourth goal of the day and Sydney Nikolevski (Penfeld, N.Y.) got a goal to make it 18-2 with 11:53 to play. Heidelberg got a score from Brianna Lloyd before Emily Nannarone (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) and Sam Karr both finished the scoring for Mount Union for the 20-3 win. 

Molly McGinnis (Brunswick) had three saves playing in the first half in goal for the Raiders.

Mount Union next plays at Muskingum Wednesday, March 3 at 7 p.m. in New Concord.
