Men's Volleyball: Raiders Win Streak Continues with MCVL Sweep Over Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Mount Union men's volleyball team (13-2, 8-2 MCVL) swept the Bulldogs of Adrian College (5-6, 5-4 MCVL) Sunday afternoon in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League doubleheader at Merillat Center with match scores of 3-1 and 3-1. The Raiders now extend their winning streak to 11 straight.

Game One

The Purple Raiders were led offensively by senior Justin Sibbel (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) who tallied 19 kills followed by sophomore Cameron Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) who recorded 12. Junior Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls / Akron Hoban) collected 46 assists in the Raider's 3-1 win. Junior libero Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) led the team defensively with 13 digs.

The Purple Raiders kept tight with the Bulldogs in the first set, but they then went on a 5-0 run to go up 18-14 and continued to dominate the set as the Raiders fell 25-19. The Raiders quickly answered back by making a statement to take the second and third set 25-16 and 25-23. In the fourth set, the Raiders went on a 5-0 run to go up 16-8 and finish the set and match with a score of 25-15.

Game Two

Mount Union had three players in double digits offensively as Ternent recorded 16 followed by Sibbel and junior Mark Bruns (Columbus / Upper Arlington) with 11 each. Leyden continued to dish out assists as he tallied 45 on the match, and Grenier led the match again with 15 digs followed by Ternent with 12.

The Raiders picked right back up where the left off as back-to-back kills by Sibbel put the Raiders up 19-15 in the first set. Mount Union was able to claim the first set 25-19 off a kill by junior Sam Matonis (Macedonia / Walsh Jesuit). The Bulldogs went on an early 8-3 run to start the second set, but the Raiders answered right back with a 5-0 run of their own. The set kept close, but the Raiders were unable to finish it as they fell 25-22. Just like the first match, the Raiders were able to secure wins in the next two sets with scores of 25-20 and 25-18 to end the match 3-1.

The Raiders will return home for another MCVL doubleheader this time against Wittenberg with games slated to begin at 1 and 3:30 pm from Timken Gymnasium.
