Box Score 2 MARIETTA, Ohio – The Mount Union softball team (7-1, 4-0 OAC) completed a four-game weekend sweep of the Marietta Pioneers (0-4, 0-4 OAC) with 9-1 and 7-6 wins in an a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games Sunday afternoon at Marietta Field.
Game One
The Purple Raiders were led by senior Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) with three runs, three RBIs, and a home run.
Senior Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) got things started for the Raiders getting on base and making her way around to tally the first run of the game off a grounder Pidgeon. The Raiders continued to dominate in the first inning posting three more runs to go up 4-0. A double by Alyssa Rose (Madison) resulted in two runs coming in to put the Raiders up 6-1 in the third. Pidgeon found home plate in the fifth inning to make the Raider lead 7-1 and followed it up by sending a homer past the left-field fence to go up 9-1 in the seventh inning. Marietta could not answer back in the bottom of the seventh as the Raiders secured the 9-1 victory.
Junior Alyssa Rose (Madison) got the start on the mound recording 10 strikeouts to go to 1-1 on the season. Sophomore Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) came in as relief in the seventh inning facing five batters to end the game.
Game Two
The Raiders were led by sophomore Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) and senior Savannah Miner (Louisville) who each recorded three hits and drove in two runs.
Marietta grabbed the first run of the game in the first inning, but the Raiders bounced back in the third inning to tie it up at 2-2 thanks to a triple by Heath which brought in Miner and rounded home off a throwing error. Heath answered again bringing home Miner off a single up the middle to give the Raiders the 3-2 lead inhe fifth inning. The Raiders recorded three more runs in the sixth inning, but the Pioneers were able to rally back to knot it up at 6-6 through six innings. Senior Allie Goldy (Painesville / Riverside) grabbed a single in the seventh inning to bring in Heath to go up 7-6. Guspyt protected the infield and made the last two outs to secure the 7-6 victory and complete the sweep over the Pioneers.
Junior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) started on the mound for game two recording five strikeouts on 18 batters faced in four innings of work. Junior Cheyanne Bosse (Montville / Berkshire) came in on relief to pitch three innings logging two strikeouts and the win as she improves to 3-0 on the season.
The Raiders are back in action next weekend as they take on Heidelberg in a four-game OAC set with games starting Saturday at 1 and 3 p.m. in Alliance.
