Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Mount Union men's volleyball team (17-2, 12-2 MCVL) swept the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace (6-10, 6-10 MCVL) in a Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League doubleheader Saturday afternoon with match scores of 3-1 and 3-1.
Match One
The Purple Raiders had two in double digits as senior Justin Sibbel (Stow / Stow-Munroe Falls) and sophomore Cameron Ternent (Canal Fulton / Massillon Jackson) each had 11 kills on the match and combined for five service aces. Freshman Caleb Dawson (Harmony, Pa. / Seneca Valley) led the way as he collected 32 assists. Defensively, junior libero Steven Grenier (Hawthorn Woods, Ill. / Lake Zurich) took charge with 19 digs.
Mount Union got going early as they went on a 9-3 run to start the match. Baldwin Wallace fought back to bring their deficit to 19-12, but the Raiders were able to put the set away 25-16 off an error by the Yellow Jackets. Baldwin Wallace kept tight with the Raiders during the second, but Mount Union pulled away to force a Yellow Jacket timeout at 20-16. Mount Union took advantage of the timeout going on a 4-1 run and secured the set win 25-19 off another Yellow Jacket error. Baldwin Wallace had a spark in the third set as they quieted the Raiders 9-2 to start the set. Mount Union crept back, but unable to make the final rally as Baldwin Wallace claimed the third set 25-18. The Raiders came into set four going on a 3-0 rally to go up 12-5 and force a Baldwin Wallace timeout. Mount Union was able to maintain their momentum as they secured the match win in the fourth set 25-16.
Match Two
The Raiders were led by Sibbel who recorded 14 kills and junior Jeremy Leyden (Cuyahoga Falls / Akron Hoban) who tallied up 34 assists. Defensively, Grenier again led the way as he came up with 13 digs.
The Raiders started off strong maintaining their lead, but the Yellow Jackets responded with a 6-1 rally to go up 12-9. Mount Union rallied back to force a Baldwin Wallace timeout at 24-20, but the Yellow Jackets were able to take advantage and secure a kill to claim the set 25-20. Again the Raiders stayed tight with the Yellow Jackets, but a huge block by Ternent forced a Baldwin Wallace timeout at 12-8. Mount Union kept the strong momentum with back-to-back kills by Sibbel and Leyden to force another Yellow Jacket timeout at 20-13. The Raiders held strong as they secured a win in the second set 25-19 off a service error by Baldwin Wallace. The Raiders started the match on a 4-1 run. Mount Union continued to dominate the set as they secured the win 25-14. The Raiders stayed strong through the fourth set to come up with the 25-18 win to secure the match 3-1.
Mount Union continues their 2021 season in a non-conference matchup against Penn State Behrend slated for Tuesday, March 30 at 7 pm. Due to COVID-19 regulations at Penn State, no fans will be permitted at this contest.
