Box Score BEXLEY, Ohio-- Mount Union's women's lacrosse team defeated Capital 18-17 Saturday afternoon.
Mount Union (7-1, 7-1 OAC) was led by Freshman Katie Clark (Cuyahoga Falls / Walsh Jesuit) with four goals and three assists.
Junior Mackenzie Lewis (Hudson / Walsh Jesuit) scored four goals for the Purple Raiders as well.
Senior Kaitlyn Murphy (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County) scored three goals while senior Sydney Bumbarger (Newbury Park, Calif.), sophomore Sam Karr (Newark Charter, Del. / Newark Charter) and freshman Eden Kesler (Chagrin Falls / Kenston) had two goals each.
Sophomore Julia Bates (East Lyme, Conn. / East Lyme) had one goals and three assists for Mount Union.
Capital (6-2, 6-2 OAC) was led by Luci Kanowsky with five goals.
Capital grabbed the first two goals on the day but a 3-0 run with goals by Clark, Karr, and Kesler and an assist from Clark gave Mount Union a 3-2 lead just nine minutes into the game.
Capital tied the game up but a goal from Clark and then just 19 seconds later from a pass by Bates, Lewis scored giving the Purple Raiders a two goal advantage.
Three straight goals for Capital gave them a one goal lead with 12:56 left in the first half.
Mount Union finished the first half on a 4-1 run to take a lead of 9-7 into the half. Two goals from Lewis with Clark and Bates assisting on them and a goal a piece to Clark and Bates with an assist from Bumbarger.
Mount Union got the first goal of the second half from karr unassisted.
The Purple Raiders extended their lead out to 15-10 on a 5-2 run with goals coming from Murphy twice and one goal each to Kesler, Lewis and Bumbarger.
Capital responded with a 5-1 run closing to within one goal with Clark scoring in the middle of their run for Mount Union.
A goal from Murphy and Bumbarger both unassisted along with a Capital goal pushed the Raiders lead out to 18-16 with 3:46 remaining. Capital grabbed another goal with 1:51 left in the period.
Senior goalkeeper Molly McGinnis (Brunswick) made one of her 17 saves in the final minute of the game to keep Mount Union ahead.
Mount Union is back in action next Wednesday, Mar. 31 at 7 p.m. playing against Baldwin Wallace in Alliance.
