Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 21 Mount Union softball team (14-2, 11-1 OAC) sweep the Cardinals of Otterbein (8-8, 5-7 OAC) in a doubleheader at 23rd St. Field with a game one score of 12-4 in six innings and game two 11-2 in five innings. The Raiders remain undefeated on their home field.
Game One
The Purple Raiders were led by senior Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) who went 3-4 and had three runs on the game, as well as senior Alyssa Rose (Madison / Madison) who went 3-3 tallying up two runs.
Senior Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) got the Raiders on the board first with a double to tie it up 1-1 in the first inning. Otterbein put up two runs in the three-inning, but Rose was able to strike out back-to-back batters on bases loaded to get out of the jam. Pidgeon again sparked a four-run third inning off another double to bring in two runs. Senior Allie Goldy (Painesville / Painesville) finished up the inning with a solo shot home run to centerfield to put the Raiders up 5-3. A home run by junior Hanna Ingram (Stow / Stow) brought in three runs to put the Raiders up 8-3 in the bottom of the fifth. A double by sophomore Grace Heath (Salem / West Branch) brought in two more runs to end the inning up 10-3. The Cardinals answered back with one run, but Mount Union secured the win off a sacrifice fly to right field by senior Savannah Miner (Louisville) to bring in Rose to end the game in six innings 12-4.
Pitching for the Raiders was Rose who improves to 3-1 on the season as she recorded six strikeouts on the game on 31 batters faced.
Game Two
Mount Union was led by Heath who went 3-4 collecting three RBIs and one run, as well as Rose who went 3-3 bringing in one RBIs and one run on three doubles.
An eight-run inning to kick start game two was sparked by a double by Goldy to bring in Pidgeon, followed by a double by Rose and Ingram to bring in four runs, and a triple by Miner and a single by Heath put the Raiders up 8-0 early. Morrison escaped the second inning on a bases-loaded by only allowing one run and striking out her last batter. The Raiders added another run in the second inning off a single by Morrison to bring in Goldy to go up 9-1. A two-run homer by Heath to right field put the Raiders up 11-1 in the third inning. A solo home run by the Cardinals to start the fifth inning brought them within nine as the Raiders led 11-2. Morrison collected her next three outs and secured the win for the Raiders 11-2.
Pitching for the Raiders was Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak)remains clean on the year as she moves to 7-0. Morrison had two strikeouts on 21 batters faced on the day.
No. 21 Mount Union will continue their OAC doubleheader series as they host Ohio Northern on Friday, April 2 with games set to begin at 1 and 3 pm.
