NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Mount Union softball team (3-1) split a pair in their second doubleheader match up against Muskingum (1-3) at Donna J. Newberry Field on Sunday afternoon in a 9-0 loss and 5-4 win.
In game one, Muskingum pulled out a huge six run fourth inning to go up 7-0. The Purple Raiders struggled to get the bats going as they registered only three hits on the game compared to the Muskie's 15. The Raiders were unable to answer back as the Muskies finished the day 9-0. Senior Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarwarus Central Catholic), sophomore Alexis Temple (Mentor), and senior Savannah Miner (Louisville) registered the three hits for the Raiders. On the mound was junior Alyssa Rose (Madison) who allowed 10 hits before being relieved by Megan Zody (Westerville / Westerville Central) and junior Cheyanne Boss (Montville / Berkshire).
In game two, the Raiders got to work early answering the Muskies two runs in the first inning with one of their own thanks to a single by senior Madison Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) to bring in senior Brooke Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson). The Raiders continued to rally against the Muskies as they scored four more unanswered runs courtesy of a homerun by junior Hanna Ingram (Stow) in the fourth inning, a single from Pidegeon in the fifth to bring sophomore Grace Heath (Beloit /West Branch) home, followed by a single by sophomore Taylor Gerback (Louisville / Marlington) to center to send sophomore Olivia Lombardo (New Castle, Pa. / Laurel) home and Hellman with a single to left field to bring in Gerback. The Muskies were able to come back with two runs in the seventh inning, however that was not enough as the Raiders secured the victory 5-4. Junior Peyton Morrison (Canton / ClenOak) pitched a complete game as she tacked on two strikeouts on the day.
The Purple Raiders will continue their home and home doubleheader season with a matchup against Marietta beginning in Alliance on Saturday at 1pm and 3pm.
