Box Score 2 ALLIANCE, Ohio – The No. 22 Mount Union softball team (21-5, 18-4 OAC) swept the Blue Streaks of John Carroll (4-19, 4-18 OAC) in an Ohio Athletic Conference doubleheader at 23rd St. Field with a game one score of 12-1 and a game two score of 9-2.
Game One
Leading that Raiders were senior duo Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson) and Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) who each went 3-3 on the day. Hellman tallied up three RBIs as well as junior Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indiana Valley) including an inside-the-park home run on a wild throw.
The bats were hot early as a single to right field by Dominick drove in Hellman to knot it up at 1-1 after the first inning. A five-run second inning for the Raiders was sparked by Miner who got on from an error by the Blue Streak shortstop to drive in Alyssa Rose (Madison / Madison). The Raiders continued their aggressive offense in the third inning to go up 10-1 which included an inside park two-run home run by Guspyt. The Raiders put up two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 11 at 12-1. The Raiders would end the game on a catch in right field for the third out at 12-1.
In the circle for the Raiders was junior Alyssa Rose (Madison / Madison) who went four innings with four strikeouts on 17 batters faced. Coming in to clean up in the fifth inning was Ashley Cascio (Elyria / Elyria Catholic) making her first appearance of the year off an injury as she faced five batters to end the game.
Game Two
Leading the way for the Raiders was designated hitter Hanna Ingram (Stow / Stow) who had two hits, four RBIs, and one run. Hellman and Savannah Miner (Louisville / Louisville) each had two hits on the day.
A double from Hanna Ingram (Stow / Stow) drove in the first run for the Raiders in the second inning to go up 1-0 over the Blue Streaks. John Carroll battled back as they secured their only lead of the game from at 2-1 in the third inning, but the Raiders answered back to knot it up at 2-2 to end the third inning. A single by senior Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) drove in two runs for the Raiders in the fourth inning to put them up 4-2. A four-run fifth inning sparked by a two-run home run by Ingram put the Raiders up 7-2, followed by a single to centerfield by Isabella Sherban (Louisville / St. Thomas Aquinas) to extend the Raider lead to 8-2. To wrap up the scoring for the Raiders senior Montana Martin (Massillon / Tuslaw) drove in Dominick in the sixth inning to go up 9-2.
Pitching for the Raiders was junior Peyton Morrison (Canton / GlenOak) who took on a complete seven innings and improves her overall record to 10-1. Morrison struck out five batters on 99 pitches on the day with 34 of them being strikes.
The Purple Raiders will continue their series with the Blue Streaks as they travel to University Heights for a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon with games set for 1 and 3 pm.
