Box Score 2 WILMINGTON, Ohio – The No. 19 ranked Mount Union softball team (28-6, 25-5 OAC) took down the Quakers in their first doubleheader against Wilmington (16-18, 15-15 OAC) Saturday afternoon with a game one score of 5-1 and a game two score of 5-2.
Game One
Leading the way for the Purple Raiders was senior Allie Goldy (Painesville / Riverside) who went 3-for-3 with an RBI and a double, as well as Alexis French (Rocky River / Magnificat) who went 1-for-2 as she smashed a two-run home run in the top of the second.
Senior Maggie Dominick (Dennison / Tuscarawas Central Catholic) got things started scoring-wise for the Raiders early in the first inning as a sacrifice fly to center field drove in fellow senior Brooklyn Hellman (Canton / Massillon Jackson). Goldy followed that up with a double to bring in sophomore Grace Heath (Beloit / West Branch) as the Raiders went up 2-0 after the top of the first. Wilmington closed the gap to one scoring on a wild pitch, but the Raiders came charging right back as French hit her first home run of the season to left field to go up 4-1. A pop out to right field from senior Maddie Pidgeon (Salem / West Branch) was enough to drive Heath home and extend the Raiders lead to 5-1 after four and a half innings of play.
In the circle for Mount Union was Peyton Morrison who went seven complete innings tallying five strikeouts and allowing only one run on 29 batters faced. Morrison improves to 13-1 on the season.
Game Two
The Raiders were led by Hellman who went 2-for-3 on the game with one run, one RBI, and two stolen bases. Also taking charge was sophomore Payton Guspyt (Port Washington / Indiana Valley) who went 2-for-3 with one double bringing in her lone RBI on the game.
The Raiders picked right back up where they started in game one as a triple from Heath brought in Hellman to get things started. Pidgeon followed that up to get on first from an error by the shortstop, allowing Heath to run home. The Raiders continued to put up runs as singles from Hellman and senior Savannah Miner (Louisville / Louisville) each drove in a run for the Raiders to go up 4-0 after their half of two innings. Guspyt tallied up the Raider's last run of the day off a double to bring in freshman Courtney Kenworthy (Kent / Theodore Roosevelt) home in the fifth inning. The Quakers tried to rally back in the bottom of the seventh as they grabbed two runs, but the Raiders finished the day on top with a score of 5-2.
Pitching for the Raiders in game two was junior Alyssa Rose (Madison / Madison) as she improves to 10-2. Rose was lights out through her complete seven innings striking out seven, allowing no walks, and giving up only two runs on five hits.
The Raiders will complete the four-game series with a doubleheader Sunday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance with the games starting at 1 pm and Senior Day festivities beginning at 12:45 pm.
