Mount Union Travels to Capital in OAC Tourney - GAME PREVIEW

No. 3 seed Capital hosts No. 6 seed Mount Union in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Performance Arena in Bexley.

The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday for the 7:00 p.m. tip off of the women's game. There will be no re-admittance to the facility.
 
Teams
 
The Purple Raiders (10-15, 7-11 OAC) enter the tournament having won three of their last four games.
 
Capital (18-7, 13-5 OAC) has won four of its last five games and the Comets also swept the regular season meetings with Mount Union winning 72-53 in Bexley and 81-74 in Alliance.
 
Marietta is second in the OAC scoring with 66.6 points per game while Mount Union is sixth and averages 63.3 points but the Raiders are the top assisting team in the conference at 13.7 assists per game while Capital is ninth averaging 10.4 assists per game.
 
Players
 
Mount Union freshman Elizabeth Mason (Alliance / Marlington) leads the Raiders and is eighth in the OAC in scoring at 12.6 points per game, Mason tops the conference in field goal percentage at 53.3-percent and is sixth in rebounds per game at 6.9. Junior Dae Dae Nash (Akron / Buchtel) is sixth in the OAC in assists per game with 2.7 and seventh in steals per game with 1.7.
 
Capital's Bri O'Connor leads the Comets in scoring and is second in the OAC with 15.7 points per game, is second in assists per game with 3.1 and third in steals per game with 2.8… Samaree Perkins leads the OAC in rebounding with 10.1 rebounds per game, Demi Brewer is fourth in assists per game with 3.1 assists per game.
 
OAC Tournament History
It is the 34th OAC Tournament appearance for Mount Union as the Raiders have a 31-28 record and won titles in 1998, 2011, 2012 and 2016. Mount Union in its last two tournament appearances have won its quarterfinal match up's with a 68-64 upset over #3 Marietta and a 76-64 win over #5 Marietta.
 
Capital is making its 34th OAC Tournament appearance with a 53-25 record in tournament games and the Comets have won 10 OAC titles in 1987, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2006, 2009, and 2014. Capital has lost its last two tournament appearances with a 71-52 loss to #3 Baldwin Wallace and a 53-49 loss to #4 Marietta.
 
Mount Union and Capital have met 11 previous times in the tournament with the Raiders winning the last four matchups. All but one of the matchups have come in the semifinal or championship.

Coaches
Suzy Venet (Mount Union '98) is 293-204 (.590) in her 19th season at her alma mater.  She has led the Raiders to four OAC Tournament titles, two OAC regular season titles with four trips to the NCAA Tournament including making it to the Sweet 16 in 2010 and 2012. She has 304 career coaching wins including a season as head coach at Manchester (Ind.) and had assistant coaching stints at Minnesota State and Bowling Green.
 
Camille McPherson (Moravian '17) is 34-32 (.515) in her second season at Capital and has led the Comets back to the OAC tournament their first appearance since the Covid season in 2020-21.
