WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Mount Union junior pitcher
Drew Gernert (Mequon, Wis. / Homestead) has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week.
Gernert was dominant on the mound for the No. 21 nationally ranked Purple Raiders during their annual spring trip to Florida, posting a perfect 0.00 ERA across 7.0 innings of work last week.
The highlight of Gernert's week came on Wednesday, March 11, when he made the first start of his collegiate career against DeSales. He earned the victory in a dominant 13–4 win, tossing 5.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one walk and striking out four batters.
Gernert followed that performance with an impressive relief appearance on Saturday, March 14, against Rutgers-Camden. He threw 2.0 hitless innings, with three strikeouts, to help secure an 8–2 victory for Mount Union.
For the week, Gernert allowed zero runs and finished with seven strikeouts and only two walks in his two appearances.
This marks the first career OAC Pitcher of the Week honor for Gernert and the second for the Purple Raiders this season, joining junior
Ty Dennison, who earned the award in February.
Mount Union will next play a doubleheader against Capital on Saturday, March 21, at Huntington Park—home of the Columbus Clippers—for its OAC opener, starting at 1 p.m.
