It was the Purple Raiders second-straight home overtime defeat
and Mount Union finishes the regular season with a 12-13 record and
at 6-12 in the OAC will be the No. 7 seed in next week's OAC
Tournament and play in a quarterfinal game next Wednesday (Feb. 25)
at 7:30 p.m. at No. 2 seed and nationally ranked Capital University
in Columbus.
Ohio Northern moved to 17-8 overall and at 12-6 in the OAC
locked up the conference's No. 3 seed and will host sixth-seeded
Marietta next Wednesday in another quarterfinal in Ada.
Ohio Northern got a game-high 37 points from Kyle Meyer, Kurtis
Brown, who had three three-pointers all in double overtime, had 20
points, while Ezra Bradshaw and Sam Bastian each had 11.
Chris Switzer (Euclid/Stow-Munroe Falls) had 27 points to lead
Mount Union, while, Dave Pellerite (Olmsted Falls/Olmsted Falls)
tallied 25 points and Luke Conley (Louisville/Louisville) matched
his career-high with 22 points.
A Switzer three pointer with 15:16 left in the first half gave
the Raiders a 13-2 lead to start the game. Ohio Northern
would come back scoring nine of the next 11 points to bring the
score to 15-11 with just over 12 minutes to play in the
half.
Ohio Northern would eventually tie the game on three different
times and took a 30-29 lead with 1:49 left in the period but Mount
Union would score the final five points of the half to lead 34-30
at halftime.
The Raiders would take the lead out to eight points as a Conley
three-pointer gave Mount Union a 43-35 edge with 16:24 in
regulation. The Polar Bears rallied again as they went on a
14-4 run take just their second lead of the ball game, 49-47 at the
11:07 mark.
There would then be 11 lead changes over the next 10 minutes
until a steal and layup by Sam King (Masury/Brookfield) allowed
Mount Union to tie the game at 74. With 24 seconds left,
Meyer then gave Ohio Northern a two-point lead, 76-74 with a
jumper. Switzer then drove was fouled and converted the
three-point play to give Mount Union a 77-76 lead before Meyer sent
the game to overtime nailing one of two free throws with seven
seconds left.
In the first extra session, the Polar Bears ran out to a
four-point lead in the first minute and held a two-point advantage
with two minutes left. Mount Union tied the game at 86 on a
Jay Mathis (Tallmadge/Tallmadge) dunk to force a second
overtime.
The Raiders opened the second overtime on an 11-3 surge and a
Switzer three-pointer gave them a 97-89 lead with 2:44 left.
Brown and Meyer would hit back-to-back three pointers to get back
to within three points and after an Andy Hofener (Parma/Rocky River
Lutheran West) layup made the score 99-94 in favor of Mount Union,
Brown would hit another three and then Gene Goering hit his first
three of the game with three seconds to play that proved to be the
game-winner.
