(WINTER HAVEN, FL)—Mount Union had a season-high 20 runs
on 19 hits in a 20-7 rout of Pitt-Greensburg Tuesday at Chain of
Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida.
The Purple Raiders have now won four games in a row and stand at
4-1 overall. In those four games, Mount Union has average
12.7 runs and 13 hits per game.
Junior centerfielder Greg Ferrell (Uniontown/Green) once again
led the offensive explosion as he had three hits drove in a run and
scored four runs.
Fellow juniors in first baseman Dan Henderson (Canton/GlenOak)
and Ty Wood (Hudson/Hudson) along with sophomore second baseman
Mike Griffith (Louisville/East Canton) each drove in three runs as
10 different Raiders got hits on the day.
Mount Union also got another solid outing on the mound, this
time from sophomore Beau Smith (Frederick, MD/Frederick) who after
surrendering five runs all with two outs over the first two innings
scattered three hits over the next three scoreless innings of work
to pick up the win.
The game was tied at 5-5 after three innings before Mount Union
blasted through with an eight run fifth inning. In the frame,
the first two runners reached and a ground out left runners at
second and third. With first base open, the Bobcats decided
to intentionally walked Connor Nell (Powell/Olentangy) then Alan
Krontz (Kent/Field) drove in two runs on a single, after that the
next eight Raiders reached on an error, two walks and five
hits. When the dust finally settled eight runs had crossed
the plate and Mount Union had a 13-5 lead.
Mount Union had another big inning with a six runs in the
seventh and tacked on a run on the eighth while the Bobcats put two
more runs on the board for the 20-7 final.
The Raiders next play Webster (MO) Thursday at 9 am at Chain of
Lakes Park in Winter Haven, FL.
