Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio—Senior Jimmy Wood (Wintersville/Indian Creek) became the 26th player in school history to score 1,000 points on his way to a career-high 32 points, but it was not enough as the Mount Union men's basketball team suffered a 75-71 overtime loss at home to Wilmington. The loss is the fifth straight for the Purple Raiders while the Quakers remain atop the Ohio Athletic Conference standings with an unbeaten 4-0 conference record.
With just 46 seconds remaining in regulation, Wood buried a three-pointer from the wing on a pass from junior Justen Little (Galion/Galion), putting him at exactly 1,000 points for his career and giving Mount Union a 61-59 lead. The Raiders were just one defensive stop away from a storybook ending to the night.
Wilmington refused to let them happen, as Miles Bankston's layup with 31 seconds left tied the game. Mount Union was unable to score on the ensuing possession after a missed jumper and putback attempt. Malcolm Heard II was able to get behind the defense after a quick outlet pass but time expired before he was able to get to the basket for a layup attempt.
The Raiders took a 66-61 lead to begin the overtime period after two jumpers by Wood. Wilmington converted two three-pointers and a three-point play on their next three possessions to take a 70-66 lead with 2:15 remaining.
A three-pointer by freshman Clayton Patton (Bolivar/Tuscarawas Valley) cut the deficit to a single point with 1:54 left, but that is as close as the Raiders would get. A three-pointer by Antonio Bowman gave Wilmington a 73-69 lead with only 43 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Quakers.
Mount Union (3-6, 0-4) held a 36-25 advantage at halftime behind 13 points and five rebounds from Wood. Heard II, the conference's fourth-leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first half as the Quakers shot just 32-percent from the field.
Wilmington (5-4, 4-0) took its first lead of the game following a 17-4 run in just over six minutes of action to start the second half. The lead reached seven points with just 3:25 remaining before a 7-0 run by the Raiders.
Wood was the only Raider in double-figures with 32 points to go with a game-high nine rebound and six three-pointers. Patton, freshman Stevie Griffin (Canton/Massillon Jackson), and junior Matt Kiger (Williamstown, W. Va./Williamstown) added seven points apiece off the bench.
Bowman scored a team-best 21 points for Wilmington, followed by Heard II with 14 points and R.J. Leppert with 13 points. Klarke Ransome scored all five of his points in overtime for the Quakers.
Mount Union will return to the hardwood Wednesday night when they host Muskingum in an OAC matchup at 7:30 pm.
