Baseball Stops Three-Game Skid With Win Over Wittenberg

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

ALLIANCE, Ohio -- Mount Union stopped a three-game losing streak with an 8-6 game two victory over Wittenberg Sunday at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.  The Purple Raiders dropped the opener 12-4.

The split leaves Mount Union at 10-5 overall while Wittenberg stands at 11-2 on the season.

Trailing 1-0 in the third inning of the second game, Ian Adair (Norton/Norton) reached on an error and later scored to tie the game on a two-out RBI double from Lee Grosscup (Green/Green).

In the fifth inning the Raiders again got some clutch hitting and took advantage of a Wittenberg error.

Back-to-back singles from Adair and Jimmy Dobran (Poland/Poland Seminary) started the inning then Grosscup attempted to sacrifice bunt the runners into scoring position when a Tiger error loaded the bases.

Connor Mathis (Akron/Firestone) would drive in a run on a fielders choice and C.J. Stotler (Pittsburgh, Pa./Plum) would have a two-out, two-run, single to make it a three-run frame and Mount Union led 4-1.

Mount Union would return the favor in the sixth as they committed three errors while Wittenberg's Zach Finke had an RBI double and a sacrifice fly RBI from David Moore helped get four runs across as the Tigers retook the lead 5-4.

The Raiders got back in it in the sixth once again with two outs and another error by Wittenberg sparked a four-run inning with the big hit coming from Mathis with a two-RBI single.

The Tigers brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh but relief pitcher Cory Douglass (Independence/Garfield Heights) shut the door and got his first win of the season.

Mathis and Stotler each drove in three runs to pace the Raiders offense.

Wittenberg had a five-run first inning and scored eight unanwsered runs in a 12-4 win in game one.

Mount Union committed a season-high six errors and its offensive highlight was a three-run home run from Stotler.

Matt Rupert pitched five innings to get the win on the mound for Wittenberg and go to 4-0 on the season.

Zach Carlino (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) gave up six earned runs in 1.1 innings to take his first loss on the season.

Mount Union hosts Denison next Saturday, Mar. 24 at 1 pm in a non-conference doubleheader at 23rd Street Field in Alliance.
