Baseball: Raiders Get Complete Game Performance From Mary in Nebraska Wesleyan Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Mount Union sophomore pitcher Phil Mary (Venetia, Pa./Peters Twp.) pitched a complete game victory in a 2-1 win in game one as the Purple Raiders split a pair of games with Nebraska Wesleyan Monday at Henley Field in Lakeland, Florida.

Mount Union, which lost game two 3-2, is now 3-2 halfway through its Florida swing while Nebraska Wesleyan is 4-4 on the season.

Mary scattered eight hits over seven innings and did not allow an earned run to pick up a win in his first start of the season.

The Raiders two runs came in the second inning. Joey Keleman (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) started the frame with a single, stole second then came home on a single up the middle from Kyle Spellman (Ravenna/Ravenna). Spellman, who moved up to second on a throw after his hit, later scored on an RBI single from Travis Wood (Hudson/Hudson).

Nebraska Wesleyan opened up the first inning of game two with a pair of singles then a sacrifice bunt attempt was thrown away by the Raiders that allowed a run to score and left two runners on base. The very next at-bat the Prairie Wolves lined into a triple play as the second baseman Nick Piotrowski (Macedonia/Nordonia) threw to shortstop Jimmy Scott (Hollland/Toledo St. John's) for an out at second, Scott then threw to Wood at first base for an out and Wood threw home to catcher Jake Smith (Salem/West Branch) to cut down a runner at the plate and end the inning.

Mount Union came back to take the lead with two runs in the second as Keleman and Spellman started the inning with hits and later each came home on a two-run double from Smith to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead.

The game stayed 2-1 until the bottom of the fifth when Nebraska Wesleyan tied the game on a Spencer Scheer double down the left field line and would later score the go-ahead run on a two-out RBI single from Cole Schumacher.

Connor Cech allowed only two hits over the final two innings to get the win in relief while Nick Satovich (New Kensington, Pa./Plum) made his first collegiate start for the Raiders and allowed only two earned runs and struck out three over 4.2 innings to take the loss.

Mount Union is back in action Wednesday, March 8 at 1 p.m. with a double header against Bridgewater (Va.) at Lake Myrtle.
