Men's Basketball: Raiders Sink Tartans for Fourth Straight Victory

PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Mount Union's men's basketball team collected their fourth straight victory as the Purple Raiders defeated Carnegie Mellon 82-71 Tuesday evening at Skibo Gym.

Mount Union (4-1) was led by senior Tommy Stenger (North Canton/Hoover) who finished with 24 points and eight rebounds.

Carnegie Mellon (0-3) was led by Seth Henry who finished with 20 points.

Mount Union started the game with back-to-back three-point field goals from junior Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) and Stenger. The Purple Raiders kept close with the Tartans throughout the half cutting the Carnegie Mellon lead to three with 5:39 left. Carnegie Mellon controlled a four-point margin heading into the intermission break.

The Purple Raiders shot 15-of-38 (39.5%) from the field and 6-of-15 (40%) from behind the three-point line. Carnegie Mellon shot 14-of-21 (66.7%) from the field and 8-of-12 (66.7%) from behind the three-point line.

Mount Union cut away at the Carnegie Mellon lead to start the second half as the Purple Raiders sliced the Tartan advantage to four with 14:19 left. Freshman Collen Gurley (Akron/Hoban) sank a three-point jumper to shrink the Tartan advantage to one. A steal and layup on the following possession gave Mount Union the lead at 51-50. The Purple Raiders went on to extend the point-margin to 11 with 5:47 left in regulation. Bower-Malone drained five straight free throws to take the victory for the Purple Raiders.

Mount Union went 16-of-27 (59.3%) from the floor and 9-of-12 (75%) from the free throw line. Carnegie Mellon went 9-of-25 (36%) from the field and 11-of-12 (91.7%) from the charity stripe.

The Purple Raiders return to Alliance, Ohio for the season home opener against Baldwin Wallace on Tuesday, November 27 at 7 p.m.
