Box Score ALLIANCE, Ohio--Mount Union's men's basketball team defeated John Carroll 95-74 to improve to 7-1 and 3-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference Wednesday night at McPhearson Academic and Athletic Complex. The victory marked the Purple Raiders seventh straight victory and the longest win streak since the 2014-15 season.
Five Purple Raiders finished with double-digit point totals as Mount Union was led by Tommy Stenger (North Canton/Hoover) who finished the contest with a career-high 30 points. Junior Nathan Bower-Malone (Stow) and senior Andrew Francesconi (Tallmadge) both chipped in with 14 points, freshman Deontae McCollum (Canton/Canton McKinley) collected 13 points and junior D'Vontay Friga tallied 10 points.
The Blue Streaks (3-3 and 0-2 in the OAC) were led by Jackson Sartain who recorded 21 points.
Mount Union jumped out on the Blue Streaks with a 13-7 lead capped off with a dunk from John Carroll. The Blue Streaks chipped away at the Mount Union point margin cutting the Purple Raider advantage to 10 with 8:31 left in the half. Mount Union put together a 9-2 run to go up by 14 at 45-31. The Purple Raider defense shut down the Blue Streaks to only allow five points in the closing minutes of the half.
The Purple Raiders went 18-of-37 (48.6%) from the field while shooting a perfect 6-of-6 (100%) from the charity stripe. The Blue Streaks shot 13-of-32 (40.6%) from the floor while going 3-of-7 (42.9%) from the free throw line.
Mount Union continued the momentum in the second half striking with a quick 11-0 run. At the 13:49 mark, freshman Collen Gurley (Akron/Hoban) sank a layup to extend the Purple Raider advantage to 67-42. Following a Mount Union timeout, the Purple Raiders sank back-to-back three-point field goals to go ahead 93-68. Mount Union cruised to a 95-74 victory.
The Purple Raiders shot 18-of-29 (62.1%) from the floor and 4-of-4 (100%) from the free throw line. The Blue Streaks went 12-of-43 (27.9%) and 7-of-22 (31.8%) from behind the arc.
Next up, Mount Union travels to face Wilmington on Saturday, December 8 with a 3 p.m. start time.
